Notes for JAMES AUGUSTUS MCQUITTY
(Day & McQuitty, p. 76): "James Augustus worked on his fathers farm until 1849, when the Gold Fever in California had struck everyone. He went to California and worked in the mines for several years, returning to Boone Country in 1853. He
was successful in mining, having accumulated sufficient money to purchase the farm upon which he resides, containing 353 acres. Records show that on Jan. 25, 1854, J.A. McQuitty bought a slave called Green, age 30 years from John W. Rollins
for $80.00.
In 1864, he enlisted in Capt. John Maxwell's company, US. Army, Williams Regiment, Shelby's Brigade, Confederate cavalry, remaining in this command until the close of the war, when he returned home and resumed the active duties of life. Records
show he had red hair, a trait for McQuitty's. According to some war records, he contracted pneumonia and died in service."
