Death of Dr. Caleb Scott
at age of 90
Dr. Caleb Scott died Tuesday morning at the home of his
daughter Dr. Hattie L Wilkerson. Dr. Scott was one of the
oldest and best known citizens of eastern White county: for
several years he had been unable to practice his profession
on account of infirmity of old age and failing faculties but
he experienced no serious illness previous to his death
which came peacefully and with but a few hour's warning.
Only the day before, he had passed his 90th birthday
anniversary and had expressed his opinion that he would be
able to round out the century. But the aged body was worn
out and a few hours later it had ceased its activities
forever.
Funeral services were conducted at the Wilkerson residence
Thursday afternoon by Rev. Wells of Delphi, burial being
made at Warden cemetery near Sitka.
Deceased was born in Wayne county, Indiana; his family moved
to Cass county near Burnettsville in 1827: of his father's
family of nine children, Levi who lives in Texas is the only
one now left. Mr. Scott early evinced a talent to treat the
sick and in 1847 he moved to Burnettesville where he took up
the practice of medicine, having previously studied under
some doctor in that vicinity. For the next 60 years his
entire time was devoted to this profession, all of it in
White county except one year which he spent in Illinios. In
1868 he moved to his farm in Liberty township where he
resided until 1906.
Dr. Scott was married three times, his first wife being a
Miss Hicks of Burnettesville, the second a Miss Sheperd of
Carroll county and the third Miss Elizabeth Healy of Royal
Centre. From the last marriage 8 children, 30 grandchildren
and 1 greatgrandchildren survive; The children
are--Mrs.Viola Bunnell of Burlington , N. Dak., Henry Scott
of Flaxton, N. Dak., S. A. Scott of Walla Walla, Wash.,
Horace Scott of Ferry, Wash., Mrs. Margaret Tedford of
Frankfort, Ind., Marcellus Scott, Mrs. Mary Burget and Mrs.
Hattie L. Wilkerson of this vicinity.
Of the several children who preceded him one son Arne died
in Andersonville prison during the Civil War; another child
Mrs. Grace Churchill died in Dakota two months ago.
