James McDermott, Sr.
                                            
  The death of James McDermott, one of the best known Catholics and one of 
  the early settlers of Clinton county occurred at his home in Charlotte, 
  Clinton county, Iowa on Easter Sunday  morning. Mr. McDermott had been  
  in poor health for more than two years but had been confined to his home 
  for only about three months.
  
  James McDermott  was  born  September 29,  1847  in  County Roscommon,  
  Ireland. He came to St. Louis at the  age of three years, and moved to 
  Clinton county in 1857. On  April 17, 1877 at Villa  Nova, Iowa he was  
  married to Mary Shannon. To this union were born ten children, nine of  
  whom survive; Mary and Leo at home,  Mrs. H. U. (Gertrude) Brinkman of  
  Cavour, SD, Mrs. J. P. (Florence) Fullan of Mc Laughlin, SD, Mrs. C. T. 
  (Monica) Hanrahan of Charlotte, Iowa., John of Welton, Cleo of DeWitt,  
  Luke and James of Delmar. One son, Leonard J., World War veteran, died  
  at Camp Dodge in Iowa October 13, 1918. He also leaves one sister, Mary 
  and two brothers William and John of De Witt.
  
  The funeral was held at Assumption church in Charlotte, Tuesday morning 
  at 9:30,  Rev.  Thomas  O'Doud  celebrating  the  Requiem  High  Mass.  
  Pallbearers were J. M. Cranny, W. J. Waters, Frank Hanrahan, Peter Troy, 
  Rob Troy, John Dolan and John Monahan.
  
  The following out-of-town relatives attended the funeral; John Shannon, 
  Keota, Iowa; Thomas Shannon and daughter Grace of Lawler, Iowa; Patrick 
  Farrell and wife, Raymond, Iowa;  Mrs. John O'Connell, Waterloo, Iowa;  
  Will J.  Shannon  and  Bernice, Chicago,  Ill.;  Mrs.  Nellie Shannon,  
  Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Harry Ely, Chicago, Ill.;  M. F. and P. L. Donegan  
  from Davenport, Iowa.; Mrs.  Will Showalter, Davenport,  Iowa; Mr. and  
  Mrs. Harry M. Smith, De Witt, Iowa; Mrs. Sadie McDermott and Evelyn, De 
  Witt, Iowa; Mrs. Ed Monahan and Gertrude, Clinton, Iowa; James McGrath, 
  Clinton, Iowa; Mrs. Bert Comstock,  Clinton, Iowa; Charles Kenney, Joe  
  Troy and J. M. Cranny, all of Clinton, Iowa.

  Mrs. James McDermott died at her home here at 12:30 this afternoon after 
  an illness of three years duration.
  
  Mary Shannon, daughter of Patrick and  Julia Shannon was born November  
  15, 1857 and was married to James McDermott April 17, 1877. to them were 
  born six sons; Luke, James, John, Cleo and Leo, and Leonard who died at 
  Camp Dodge in 1918;  four daughters; Miss  Mary McDermott, Mrs. Monica  
  Hanrahan, Mrs. Florence Fullan and Mrs. Gertrude Brinkman.
  
  Funeral services were held at the Church of the Assumption in Charlotte, 
  Saturday morning  at 9:30.  The Rev.  J. S.  Peters officiated  at the  
  Requiem High Mass. John Kane  Jr. sang an Ave Maria  and "Jesus Be Her  
  Rest Eternal".
  
  Pallbearers were R. J. Powers, James Farrell, Aloysius Hanrahan, Walter 
  Dolan, John Manning and  William Quinlan, Interment  in the Assumption  
  cemetery.
  
  From out of the city came Mr. and Mrs. William Shannon and Bernice, Mr 
  and Mrs.  William  Showalter,  Isabel Shannon  and  Eugene  Farrell of  
  Chicago, Mrs, P. S. Farrell and Vincent of Waterloo, Mrs H. Simmons, Mr. 
  and Mrs.  Frank Monahan  and  Urban Hanrahan  of  Cedar Rapids,  M. F.  
  Donegan, P.  L. Donegan,  James Donegan  and  Mrs Mrs.  R J.  Troy and  
  daughter Helen of Davenport, F. Boysen of Sioux Falls, SD.
