John P. McDermott
                                            
  John P. McDermott, 65, died  at 4:30 p.m. Sunday  in De Witt Community  
  Hospital. He had been in ill health sometime and had a stroke three days 
  ago in the home of a daughter, Mrs. William Reed Jr. of De Witt, Iowa.
  
  Mr. McDermott was born November 10, 1887 near Charlotte to the late Mr. 
  and Mrs James McDermott. He spent his  entire life in the vicinity and  
  was married April 21, 1921 to Mae Troy at De Witt. She died in 1930. He 
  was a World War I Veteran.
  
  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs William Reed of De Witt and Mrs. Norman 
  Scibotta of Elgin,  Ill; 10 grandchildren;  four brothers,  Cleo of De  
  Witt, James of Delmar, Luke of Charlotte, Leo in California, and three 
  sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Brinkman, Austin,  Minn.; Mrs. Monica Hanrahan,  
  Charlotte; and  Mrs.  Florence Fullan  of  San  Francisco, California.  
  Besides his wife and parents he was preceded in death by one sister Mary 
  and a brother Leonard.
  
  Funeral services were held at 9 a.m.  Wednesday in St. Anne's Catholic 
  church in Welton, with Rev. Frank Lawler officiating. burial was in St. 
  Joseph's cemetery in De Witt. Hanrahan Funeral  Home in De Witt was in  
  charge of arrangements.

Last rites for John McDermott, lifelong  resident of the De Witt area,
were held Wednesday with a prayer service at 8:30 a.m. in the Hanrahan
funeral home.  Requiem mass was  celebrated   at 9  a.m. in St.  Ann's
Catholic church, Welton, with Rev. Frank Lawlor officiating.

Pallbearers were Leonard,   William,  Patrick and   Joseph  McDermott,
Edward and  Urben J.  Hanrahan.  Burial was  in St. Joseph's cemetery,
DeWitt, with  Rev.  William   Kennedy  of Petersville  in    charge of
graveside rites.

Among those attending the funeral from a distance were Helen and Peggy
Troy, Chicago, and others from Clinton and towns in this vicinity.

                             Leo J. McDermott
                                            
  Funeral rites for Leo J. McDermott, former Charlotte resident, who died 
  Monday in Spokane, Washington, will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Assumption 
  Catholic church,  Charlotte,  with Reverend  Frederick  A. Verbeckmore  
  officiating.  Burial in the church cemetery.  
  
  Friends may call after  7:00 p.m. at  the Hanrahan Funeral  Home in De  
  Witt, where the parish rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
  
  Mr. McDermott was born March 8, 1899, the son of James and Mary Shannon 
  McDermott. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired construction  
  worker.
  
  He is survived by a brother Cleo in De Witt, besides nieces and nephews.
  
  He died November 13,  1967. Pallbearers were  Charles Kenney, Clarence  
  Smith, Leonard Shannon, Ed Hanrahan, Tom Burke and Mike Costello.

                              Luke McDermott
                                            
  Luke McDermott, 83 of Charlotte died early today in his home. Services 
  will be  at 9:30  a.m. Tuesday  at the  Assumption Catholic  church in  
  Charlotte, with  Rev. Frederick  Verbeckmoes officiating.  Burial will  
  follow in the  Assumption cemetery. Friends  may call  in the Hanrahan  
  funeral home in De Witt after 7 p.m. Sunday. The parish rosary will be 
  recited at 8 p.m. Monday.
  
  He was born in Charlotte November 27,  1883, the son of James and Mary  
  Shannon McDermott. He farmed in the Petersville-Charlotte area all his 
  life.
  
  He is survived by two brothers; Cleo of De Witt and Leo of Spokane, Wash 
  . and  several nieces  and nephews  he  was preceded  in death  by his  
  parents, four sisters and three brothers.

                            Leonard McDermott
                                            
  Leonard McDermott, son of James and Mary (Shannon) McDermott, residing 
  one half mile south of Charlotte, died yesterday morning at 5 o'clock at 
  Camp Dodge from pneumonia.
  
  McDermott has only been in Camp six weeks and the news of his death was 
  received with regret by the many friends of the family.
  
  Besides his parents, he leaves several brothers and sister to mourn his 
  loss. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete, pending arrival of the 
  body.

                              Cleo McDermott
                                            
  Cleo McDermott,  91, of  312  5th St,  De  Witt died  Monday  in Mercy  
  Hospital, Cedar Rapids.
  
  The funeral was at 10;30 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Catholic church, 
  De Witt. Burial  was in  Immaculate Conception  cemetery, Petersville.  
  Visitation was at Hanrahan Funeral Home, De Witt.
  
  Pallbearers were Denny  Ryan, Dick McDermott,  Kevin Sterenchuk, Terry  
  Kane, Jim  Barrios  and  Marty Ryan.  Honorary  pallbearers  were Jack  
  McDermott, Denny McMahon, Mike Kane and Mike Sterenchuk, grandsons.
  
  Mr. McDermott was born March 1, 1892 in Charlotte, the son of James and 
  Mary Shannon McDermott. He married Helena Bietman on February 14, 1917  
  in De Witt. She died February 24, 1960. He was a retired farmer.
  
  Survivors include  two sons,  William  and Leonard  of  Charlotte; six  
  daughters, Mrs. Joseph  (Mary) Ryan  of De  Witt, Teresa  McDermott of  
  Chatham, Ill., Mrs. Xavier (Ann) Barrios of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs  
  Lois Sterenchuk of  Cedar Rapids,  Mrs. James  (Helene) Kane  of Cedar  
  Rapids, and Mrs. Paul  (Josephine) McMahon of  Cottage Grove Minn.; 29  
  grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. He  was preceded in death by  
  his wife, a daughter, three grandsons, five brothers and 4 sisters.

                           Mrs. Cleo McDermott
                                            
  Mrs. Cleo McDermott, 68, of 312 5th St., De Witt, died about 2:30 a.m. 
  today, following a long illness. The requiem mass will be celebrated at 
  9 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's church, Rev Francis Kelley officiating. 
  Burial will be in Immaculate Conception cemetery at Petersville.
  
  The rosary will  be recited by  Father Kelly  at 8 p.m.  Friday in the  
  Hanrahan funeral home. Friends may call in the funeral home after 1 p.m. 
  Thursday.
  Helene Beitenman, daughter of the late Charles and Ann Reed Beitenman,  
  was born February 22, 1892 at Arcadia. She was married to Cleo McDermott 
  February 14, 1917 in St. Joseph's church, De Witt. They farmed north of 
  De Witt until moving into town eight years ago. She was a member of the 
  Altar and Rosary Society and the St. Francis Xavier Guild.
  
  Surviving are the husband; two sons, Leonard and William of Charlotte:  
  six daughters, Mrs. Joe L. (Mary) Ryan, Miss Theresa of Chicago, Ann of 
  San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Ed (Lois) Sterenchuk and Mrs. James (Helene) 
  Kane, both of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs.  Paul (Josephine) Mc Mahon of St.  
  Paul, Minn.; a sister, Sister Mary Immaculate  of Cedar Rapids, and 21 
  grandchildren.

                            Edward Sterenchuk
                                            
  Edward F. Sterenchuk, 53, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday July 19, at home 
  of an apparent heart attack.
  The funeral services are today,  Wednesday, July 22 at  10 a.m. at St.  
  Ludmila Catholic  church  in  Cedar Rapids  with  Rev.  Clarence Frana  
  officiating. burial will be in St.  Johns cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with  
  military graveside service by Hanford Post Five. The rosary was recited 
  Tuesday by the  KC's and  by the  parish at  the Teahen  Funeral Home.  
  Visitation was Tuesday. A memorial fund has been established.
  
  He was born June 4, 1928 in Cedar Rapids. He married Lois McDermott in 
  Petersville March 31,  1951. He was  a member of  St. Ludmila Catholic  
  church, the KC's 909, Catholic Workmen Lodge  137 and 45, The La Salle  
  High School Booster's Club,  and he served  as recording secretary for  
  Grain Millers Local 100.
  
  He was in the Navy and a veteran of World War II. He was an employee of 
  Penick and Ford in Cedar Rapids. He  is survived by his wife Lois; two  
  daughters, Kathleen O'Donnell of  Cedar Rapids and  Michael of Irving,  
  Texas. Also five sisters and six grandchildren.

                      Charlotte man killed in crash
                                            
  Edward Leonard McDermott Jr. 21, of rural Charlotte, apparently burned 
  to death early today in a two car crash on U. S. 61 nine miles north of 
  Maquoketa. He was traveling alone.
  
  Dennis Marshall Smith, 23, of Davenport, driver  of the other car, was 
  treated for cuts and released at Jackson County Public Hospital.
  
  Dr. J. A. Broman, Jackson county medical examiner, told the Herald that 
  it is difficult to determine the cause  of young McDermott's death but 
  that it is probable he burned to  death. He was trapped in his burning  
  car, Iowa Highway Patrolman Kenneth Frame reports.
  
  The son of  Mr. and  Mrs. Leonard  McDermott, Route  1, Charlotte, was  
  unmarried. 
  
  McDermott was southbound about 3:30 a.m.  when his vehicle crossed the  
  center line and collided head on with the northbound Smith auto. Wayne 
  Rogers, 33 of Davenport, Smith's passenger, was not reported injured.
  
  The Maquoketa Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the fire. Traffic  
  at the  scene  was  directed  by  the  highway  patrol  and  sheriff's  
  department.
  
  Young McDermott was returning home at the time of the accident after a  
  visit with his sister, Susan McDermott of Dubuque.

                           Edward McDermott Jr
                                            
  The funeral of Edward L. McDermott Jr.  21, of Route 1, Charlotte, who  
  died today in a traffic  accident north of Maquoketa,  will be held at  
  10:30 a.m. Monday in Immaculate Conception church, Petersville. Burial  
  will be in the church cemetery.
  
  Friends may call in the Hanrahan Funeral Home in DeWitt after 1:30 p.m. 
  Sunday. The rosary will be recited there at 8p.m. Sunday.
  Edward Leonard, son of Leonard and  Marcelle Irwin McDermott, was born  
  September 8, 1951  in Maquoketa. He  was employed  by the Northwestern  
  Railroad in Clinton.
  
  Surviving are his parents, two brothers, John of Low Moor and Richard at 
  home, two sisters,  Mrs Jim  (Judy) Wolfe,  Cedar Rapids  and Susan in  
  Dubuque, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Irwin and Cleo McDermott,  
  all of De Witt.

                             Thomas McDermott
                                            
  Thomas McDermott, 26, Omaha, Nebraska, formerly of Charlotte died of a  
  heart condition Friday at an Omaha hospital.
  
  Funeral arrangement are incomplete and will  be announced later by the  
  Hanrahan Funeral Home, DeWitt.
  
  Mr. McDermott was  born in Charlotte  to William  and Margaret (Wisor)  
  McDermott. He married Jennifer Tate in 1971 in Omaha. he is survived by 
  his widow, parents, one  daughter, Erin; three  sisters, Jean of Cedar  
  Rapids, Mary and Anita of Charlotte, and a grandfather Cleo McDermott of 
  DeWitt.

  Mrs. and  Mrs.  Peter  Troy announce  the  engagement  and approaching  
  wedding of their great granddaughter, Joan McDermott, daughter of John 
  McDermott to William Reed Jr.,  son of Mr. and  Mrs. William Reed. The  
  wedding will take place Saturday, November 21 at St. Joseph's church in
