Daniel immigrated to the United States about 1848 with his family, as did his brother John. Daniel settled around Lexington, Kentucky for a while, but moved to Iowa by about 1852. Again, evidence linking Daniel as a son of Phenton is circumstantial. The migration dates are fixed in part by the birthplaces of his children as shown in the censuses. According to the 1860 census, Elizabeth, age 12 was born in Kentucky, but Peter (age 8) was born in Iowa. The specific locality of Lexington is named as the birthplace of Elizabeth and Peter in notes for the funeral sermon of Veronica (Lawler) Maher, Peter's daughter.

Family tradition among Daniel's descendents is that Daniel and John entered the US through New Orleans while Patrick came through NY. These same traditions say that Daniel and John worked on Senator Henry Clay's % plantation % in KY, probably as indentured servants. According to Daniel's grandson Clem (son of Thomas), as told to Conrad Lawlor in 1962 at the funeral of Clem's brother Ed, Daniel left Ireland in 1849 with his wife and his son Thomas (Clem's father) and a brother. They took separate ships and parted in a storm. One landed in New York, and Daniel landed in New Orleans.

Daniel's tombstone reads: ``Daniel Lawlor died July 3rd, 1896, aged 83 years 1 mo 3 d's.-----May his soul rest in peace'' and below that: ``Mary his wife died July 2, 1904 aged 93 years.''
