Colds in Calais, boogers in Boulogne

For ease of getting a visa to travel Europe, as well as grabbing an opportunity to show Cathy that I too can cycle more than 10km - she was getting so supercilious about that - we chose to catch the ferry to Calais and then cycle about 45km south along the coast to Boulogne. In theory a great little trip. In practice a motorcycle would have been a great alternative!! These are just a few pics of our weekend which was fantastic overall, and a great opportunity for me to embarrass myself with my crap French. We spent one night in Calais after getting in at 11pm, and then headed off to Boulogne the next morning. Night two was spent in Boulogne, and we cycled back to Calais for the ferry on the Sunday.

At the start - all fresh and spritely...   Much of the scenery on the road. Dunes and a grey sea.   Apparently the international biker's salute   ...and now I try   Hundreds of bunkers like this one lined the coast - with many WW2 museums   Another bunker with gun turret on top   Fresh air, sun and the open road   Made it - into Boulogne and to the Vieille-Ville (old city)   Entrance to the chateau within the old city walls   Botanical entrance to the old city   Some front facades on older buildings   Disconcertingly excited discovery by Cath. She insisted I spend much time here learning all I can...   Oh dear, someone's in trouble! Tea in Wimereux   One of the squares in town   The pumping wind for the return to Calais - reckon near galeforce!   ...and the affect it had on my mood...   Church in small town called Wissant on way back - needed break   Cath showing her lack of exhaustion by treating me to her deboned chicken, rave moves   A strange tower in the middle of Calais - where we stopped, exhausted, for a coffee   Finally back in Blighty with the white cliffs before us
