Grassfield Baptist Church

The Beginning of the Church

In August of 1958, Southside Baptist Church in South Norfolk sent a committee to survey the community of Grassfield to see if enough people were interested in organizing a Baptist Church there. The community was very responsive and on November 25, 1958 the first meeting of the Grassfield Mission,  under sponsorship of Southside Baptist Church, was held in a tent on the Hershberger-Bateman property at 1844 Cedar Road. On December 27, 1958, Rev. L.N. Howard, conducted the first service as pastor of the newly formed Grassfield Mission.

Prayer meetings and Sunday School classes were carried on in homes and garages of various members of the mission until the first phase of the building program was completed in May of 1959. Now for the first time the Grassfield Mission was under one roof at 1772 Cedar Road. It wasn’t long before these facilities were inadequate and in April, 1960 the second phase of the building program was completed which provided additional Sunday School class rooms, a pastor’s study and kitchen. The first phase building was then remodeled as a sanctuary for worship with pews and carpet added.

On Sunday afternoon, February 5, 1961 at 3:00 P.M., the Grassfield Mission was organized as the Grassfield Baptist Church. Many changes have taken places over the years in both the building and the congregation. In June of 1987 a much needed Sunday School wing was added to relieve overcrowding and the new and existing structures were bricked. Over the years a number of memorials have been give to the church to magnify its beauty, two of which are a steeple and lighted outdoor sign.

We are a proud associate of the Southern Baptist Convention.
