march 30, 2001 i recently bit the bullet and swallowed my pride. and now i can say i'm an owner of *spiritual machines* by canada's own our lady peace. (mandy i know you're smiling) what can i say, this album blew my socks off. literally, i'm still looking for them (adult joke). now as ironic as this is i've seen olp about nine times in concert but i've never really been a fan, until that is; happiness....came out. but my ears really perked up when i heard the song in repair on the radio for the first time. this album is far from that "canadian sound" that has gotten "oh so boring" and which turned me off in the first place. i suggest anyone who has their preconceived notions about this band to pick this up and really listen to it, with a fresh ear. my favorites are going to have to be right behind you and everyone's a junkie. good music is good music and this is. a cd that never really strays far from my stereo is built to spill's *keep it like a secret*. built to spill has proved that "guitar rock" doesn't have to be mind-less. they've proved it time and time again. this was their last studio album and it still is as good if not better then their earlier work. not too mention my favorite song resides on this record. carry the zero gives me head tickles (that's what i call it when your hair stands up on end) to this day. even though i've heard it a thousand times, it just never loses it's magic. intense but in an arena you can still breathe in. brilliant. a friend introduced me to leona naess a couple weeks ago. he literally forced her cd *comatised* on me; claiming he knew i would love it. well he was absolutely right. i haven't taken it out of my stereo since i got it. it reminds me of beth orton a little, maybe it's that girl and a guitar thing. but i'm a sucker for an acoustic sound and although it's not toally acoustic it still gives me my "fix". be sure to check out lonely boy and the opening track lazy days. |
