GRAVITY CAST: RYUKO SAKUMA
Name: Ryuko Sakuma “I’m like a snowflake, one of a kind, but doomed to join the endless white of the snow…” Ryuko has suffered an identity crisis for the majority of her life. But it’s to be expected when you’re the only child of deceased singing legend, Ryuichi Sakuma. The public identifying her as simply “Ryuichi’s daughter” has been a nagging irritancy she hasn’t been able to shake. To forge her own identity she utilised her greatest strengths (vocals, imitation and costume design) to become a sensation on the karaoke circuit. Doing karaoke-cosplay, the audience scream her name joyfully, not because of who her father is, but because of what she is. The downside to expressing herself through karaoke is she’s just imitating, she may enjoy it and excel, but she isn’t really showing off whom she is. Ryuko’s favourite person to karaoke-cosplay is Shuichi Shindo. The best part is, she gets to wear his actual costumes! It helps to be his adopted daughter. While she enjoys singing in his costumes, that is as far as she goes concerning exploiting her Bad Luck connection. Ryuko is an extreme Bad Luck fan. Much to the dismay of her fathers, Shuichi and Eiri, she insists on sleeping overnight infront of ticket booths like any normal hardcore fan, waiting in lines for hours for new CDs and merchandise, ect. She does likewise for her other passion, Eiri Yuki novels. She has all her books signed and like the other fanatics, she excitedly waits in line for him to sign his latest romantic masterpiece. Accompanying her everywhere is Kumagorou, the adorable pink plush bunny that formerly belonged to Ryuichi. He’s a comfort for her whenever she’s low, or needs to talk through something. His Kumagorou Beam attack comes in handy around morose or annoying people. She particularly uses this attack on her bizarre uncle, Tatsuha, who tends to be morose AND annoying. Since Ryuichi died his life has frozen in time. He hasn’t advanced in life, and still treats life as if he were a teenager. For all of Ryuko’s life he’s either constantly compared her to Ryuichi, or plain old acted as if she were Ryuichi. At every turn his antics have frustrated the hell out of her, especially when she wants to indulge in her Bad Luck DVDs and he his Nittle Grasper DVDs, ending in fights that see them both grounded by Eiri. The two have great affection for the other; their relationship is that of siblings as opposed to an uncle-niece relationship. As a baby she enjoyed plying with Eiri’s unguarded laptop – much to his distress as he so often forgot to make back-up files. To keep her busy little hands away from his pressure work he bought her a children’s learning centre that looked like a laptop and promised to get her one just like his when she was a big girl. The distraction worked and his laptop was finally safe. As she got older she became more inquisitive about his work and wanted to learn how to write a story; from the humble beginnings of the fundamentals BME (Beginning, Middle, End), Eiri nurturer her imagination into a remarkable skill. Now Ryuko must harness her skill into song writing. As the lyricist and vocalist for Snowflake she must search herself for the songs within. No longer does she have the security of role-playing to hide behind, it’s time to bare all.
