Born to a poor woman who survived on the streets by selling herself to random men, Umi Kawai found herself alone at a young age when a client strangled her mother to death. Close by, she listened to her mother’s cries for help. When found scrounging for scraps behind a restaurant, young Umi was sent to an orphanage. Her life wasn’t improved vastly as she was subjected to constant whispers and rejection from the other kids. Lonely, she indulged herself with schoolwork, igniting a continuing passion with education.

At age 13 her life took a drastic change when she met young gang leader, Ikeda Ryuzaki. Ikeda took to her immediately without judgement. She was accepted by his group, and soon became his lover. Umi Kawai had found a place she belonged, she was happy. No more would those who looked down on her push her around; an elder member taught her the art of blade battle. Her thick, long braid was perfect for harbouring dozens of knives for retrieval within seconds. As her skills developed, so did her reputation as a powerful force. She became widely known as Umi Kowai (Scary Umi).

Three years later, on her 16th birthday, Ikeda and she went out drinking. He wanted to give her a gift like no other. That’s when he led her to a quiet residential neighbourhood, opened fire on an innocent family, and showed her the sort of man he really was. When Umi threatening to call the police he shot her in the side and moved on to the next home. Umi dragged herself through the pouring rain. He had killed another family. Umi sough to stop him, but was promptly shot in both hands before she could grab a knife. Half dead and delirious, she knew she had to stop him, even if it killed her. He’d already killed three families, she couldn’t let a fourth die. Somehow, she found the strength to take a knife with her broken, bleeding hands, and throw it at him, slicing his severing cord.

Umi Kawai was the key witness in the trial to put him away from several life sentences. The dedication of the lawyers involved in working with her, inspired Umi. She knew where her destiny lay.

The Ryuzaki Gang branded Umi a traitor; after a beating, she was kicked out of the gang, who she assumed were her friends. With no one to protect, she sliced off her braid, and was forced to live on the streets.

Unexpectedly, a slow, but kind transsexual prostitute, once mocked by Umi, offered her a place to stay with her. She accepted, and they became friends. She also was accepted into a prominent law school, her first year paid for as an act of gratitude from the family she’d saved.

By chance a year later she met Suguru Fujisaki, the recently ex-synth player and arranger for hit sensation, Bad Luck. Because she had saved him from falling over the side of a bridge she forced him to be her assistant as she studied. He complied, half out of fear, and half because he had nothing else to do really. His forced labour really was a smoke screen, as she’d pitied the lonely boy.

Over the next couple of months they developed a fondness for the other’s company. However this newfound friendship couldn’t stop the young woman’s devouring pain when Sarah was found murdered. Her murder was treated lightly. It made Umi question her own role in the world. Once again she lost faith in herself, and resolved to give in to her roots as street trash, attempting to become a prostitute. Fortunately Suguru talked her back to her senses that same night.

The following day she was given an offer too good to refuse, and agreed to become Bad Luck’s “law advisor” with all schooling expenses covered by their manager and producer.

After convincing Suguru to follow his heart, and join back with his band, she was promptly picked up in a helicopter by Judy Winchester for a month of shopping, manicures, sightseeing around the USA, and playing nanny to young Michael. She was supposed to be learning how to be a woman, however she returned cruder and thoroughly weapon efficient!

Umi moved in with Suguru, who had bought his own apartment while she was abroad. Everything was going smoothly, till one fateful night, after everyone drank their brains out, celebrating the completion of their new album, the two had unprotected sex. She found herself pregnant three weeks later. After discussing it, she went to have an abortion. Last minute, prepped and ready to begin the procedure she couldn’t go through it.

Because they were going to have a child, Suguru asked to marry her. She refused, since he was asking for the wrong reason. A month later, he asked again, this time she accepted. They named their baby Sara, for their dearly departed friend.

With her studies completed, she was offered many lucrative jobs. However, with her baby one year old, she chose the only firm that offered a day-care centre in the building. Taking the job was a big risk, they were small, struggling and all women. Their dedication, personality and that delightful day-care package sealed the deal.

Today the firm is one of the largest and most successful in the county. Umi is a senior member, and has turned down partner offers numerous times. Rather than put her past behind her, she’s embraced it for forging the sort of woman and attorney she is today.

Because she wanted to become a lawyer to help people, rather than for the money, her clients are only taken if she’s confident of their innocence, or their circumstances are acceptable. No client is beneath Umi Fujisaki, she knows exactly where she came from.

Her transparency, crude wit, beauty and life struggles have seen her rise to be a media darling. As the spokesperson for Bad Luck, her face is often on TV screens. Housewives across Japan point her out as a role model for their daughters. Of course, women of the upper class, many who know and pity Suguru’s mother, snub her as the same old terrorist, not fit for public attention.

Umi just does her own thing. Regardless of what others may think, she doesn’t care; the only opinions that matter are those of her family and friends.
