An Evening RiseI've been fly fishing for about 8 years now. Initially for trout in our local stillwaters and then further afield to various resevoirs. From there I progressed to river fishing and I have to admit I would prefer to fish them all the time. However the nearest real river fishing is at least one & half hours drive (often more) and therefore is not an option without a little bit of planning (and fitting it around skiing, family and work!)

I have recently taken to fishing for pike and so have also tried fishing for them on the fly. So far I have had only limited success-the best being about 4lb. I have had more success with dead baits with fish to 18lb.

Since the beginning I was fascinated by the flies used and quickly learnt to tie my own- check out my

Fly Fishing For Pike

3lb Pike on the FlySo far I have had only limited success-the best being about 4lb.I lost another one slightly larger which had taken a "dry mouse fly"-it was very exciting to watch it following the "mouse" just under the surface and then making a slashing attack on it.

Tackle used has been a 9'6" Shakespear Leander (7 weight). While this is an excellent rod it lacks backbone for casting large pike flies attached with wire traces. If you are serious about fly fishing for pike then a stiffer rod or maybe a proper pike fly rod would make life easier.

I usually use a floating line as the rivers and drains we fish are generally not particularly deep. End tackle is 12lb nylon, a swivel, 12 inches of Drennan 7-Strand wire trace and finally a snap-link. The snap link allows for easy changing of the fly.

I usually work the drains by fan casting over a section then moving upstream a few yards and repeating. Often pike will follow the fly right to the bank and may try to take it as you lift into the cast so keep your eyes open.

Most successful flies have been those incorporating lots of white. Particularly bucktail streamers, an oversized "cats whisker" fly (in lime green & white) and "zonker style" flies.

Fly Fishing For Trout

Ian afloat on Ladybower Resevoir
Here's my mate Ian who first got me started fly fishing. A blank day on Ladybower Resevoir but at least the company was good. Ian is also excellent at rowing- a fine attribute in a boating buddy!

Andy Fly Fishing

My friend Andy got me interested in pike fishing.
I persuaded him to try the gentle art of fly fishing
and damn good at it he was too. Here he is bringing
a lively trout to hand at my syndicate's water.
