HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER

The Golden Retriever evolved, as a breed, in Scotland in the 1800s. The sport of hunting was practised by the wealthy and retrievers became a popular hunting companion. Retrievers were valued for their versatility and ability to work game on land and water.

Goldens made their first appearance as a 'finished' breed by being registered with the United Kennel Club (Britain) in 1904. They were, however, listed with the Wavy or Flat-Coated Retrievers. After 1913, retrievers were separated by colour and Goldens were known as "Golden" or "Yellow" Retrievers. The term "Golden Retriever" was not actually recognized until 1920.

Goldens appeared in organized field trials in the early 1900s and had some success. Some early fanciers also began entering their Goldens in conformation shows. The first Golden to complete a breed championship did so, in Britain, in the early 1900s.

Golden Retrievers were seen in North America as early as the 1890s. They did not, however, gain recognition as a separate breed until 1932. It was also in 1932 that a Canadian imported a dog from Britain. This dog, Speedwell Pluto (pictured here) became a champion in Canada and the US and was the first Golden to receive Best in Show honours. It is recorded that he was also a great hunting dog and was hunted off the rugged coast of the Pacific Northwest.

As you can see, the Golden Retriever is a "newer" breed. The Golden has become a very popular family dog and different trends and fads have taken their toll on the breed. Genetic problems began to surface that have had an impact on many breeding programmes. Breeders routinely screen for genetic problems and anomalies.

Popularity is a constant concern to everyone involved with Goldens. As breeders, it is important to always keep in mind the breed's original intent and purpose as a hunting dog and companion. Golden Retriever Breeders' Association of Ontario members are serious about their responsibilities to the Golden Retriever. They strive to produce a Golden that is sound and healthy in mind and body; a Golden that exhibits the true Golden temperament and is capable of excelling in a variety of performance fields.
