The Great Bend Saddle Club is planning to host a nationally sanctioned Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association competition, planned for July 7 and 8 to fill in between the Fourth of July celebration and the Barton County Fair.

The event draws competitors from a large area and features riders who fire blanks at balloons. The concussion of the blank exploding is what burst the balloons and the riders have to not only be excellent horsemen, but perfect shots in order to pop the balloons.

The weapon of choice for these cowboy shooters is the single action revolver, armed with a .45 long Colt cartridge, so that they will have the concussion necessary to pop balloons. The riders will also dress in Old West attire and the event is expected to be quite entertaining.

The event will replace the rodeo, and was chosen as a fund raiser for the saddle club activities. Funds raised will help pay for a variety of programs, including the annual Show-De-O for handicap individuals.
