The Sting Ray! It finally made its apperence in '63, and what an aperence it made! The 63 Vette was totally re-done, base on new info and aerodynamics. It became more of a wedge-shape, and began its slow transformation ito the Vette we know and love today. This was the one, ONLY year that the Vette was made with that split rear window, but for some reason, people don't like keeping it orginal, and it is rare to find an unaltered one. It also feature nifty stuff like pop-up headlamps, cutoff rear, and recessed tail lights. It only had one size engine, a 327 V-8, but the horsepower could be incresed by adding fuel injection or higher compression, along with more free-flowing intake and exaust manifolds. The 1963 Corvette was such a hit that it nearly doubled production. It was offered as a hardtop or convertible and 21,313 were sold. It remains one of the most exciting cars ever built. A 1963 Corvette with the biggest engine avalible could do 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. "Sting Ray" was spelled in two words at this time. The Sting Ray was an outgrowth of the Q car prototypes and the Mako Shark begun in 1957. Roger Penske's Corvettes beat Carroll Shelby's Cobras during their first meeting at Riverside in 1963. And three Corvette Grand Sports with 550 hp engines beat the Ford Cobras in race after race in Nassau. |

Okay, there's a flub in what I said up there. From all I had read, it appered that a 327 was the biggest engine you could get. However, in the last week or two, I came face-to face with a cherry-red, 4 speed stick, '63 convertiable with a 427 fuel injected! The thing only has 9000 miles on it, too! My friend and I discovered it living down the street from him one day when the owner was washing it, so we did the only thing we could do. We took pictures! Lots of them! And, we then got a guy with a 2000 Vette to park right next to it! Oh, it was heaven. The old meet the new . . . well, should have pics soon! Untill then, I'm trying to get more info on the 427 engine (bore, stroke, things like that). | ||||||||||||||||
