The 1966 Impala got a slightly revised front grille and a segmented horizontal rear tail light arrangement replacing the six round taillights. The SS identification consisted of the Super Sport script on the front fenders and Super Sport emblems on the grill and on the right side of the trunk lid. The Super Sport Impalas used the same full-size tri-bar Super Sport wheel covers used by the regular Impala. In the interior, bucket seats were still part of the SS Package, as was the center console. The glovebox door and the console carried SS emblems. The instrument panel gauges were no longer available. Instead, a new optional gauge cluster attached to the console and bottom of the dash panel was available. Mechanically, all Impalas got a stronger chassis. The optional F41 suspension--which consisted of heavier springs, shocks and sway bars--was a bit ahead of its time, as it included a rear sway bar. In addition to the 325 hp 396 ci V-8, two 427 ci engines were optionally available. The RPO L36 rated at 390 hp came with the smaller oval-port cylinder heads, hydraulic camshaft and Rochester carburetor. The L72 427 ci came with the larger rectangularport heads, solid-lifter camshaft, aluminum high-rise intake and Holley 780 cfm carburetor. These things would push the output to 425 horsepower . . . More than some new Corvettes! |
