This was the first year that an automatic trassmission was avalible on the 442 (boo, hiss). The three-speed manual transmission was now standered, with the 4-speed stick or 2-speed auto being options. The engine was upped from the previous 330 of the '64s to a 400 cid. The moster 455 engine was not yet avalible, but this eninge still had plenty of kick to it. According to Car and Driver, it did 0-60 in 5.5 sec, and ran the quater mile in 15 seconds flat at 98 miles an hour. The markings of '442' on the car now ment somthing differend, now that you could get something different from a 4-speed stick;
4: 400 cid engine 4: 4 barrel carb 2: dual exaust
This is pretty much what it would mean up untill 1985, when there would no longer be a sick avalible; the 4-speed auto would be standered. The engine was . . . thirsty, to say the least. It got 10 mpg city, 16 highway. On the other hand, the 2000 Ford Expedition gets 6 mpg city, and ten highway. This might be acceptable if it were putting out a crazy amount of power, but it only puts out about 2/3 of the power the 442 does. That's pollution controls for you. Twice the gas, half the power. The 442 was not available on 4-door sedan models, just 2 door coupes, hardtops and convertibles. No Deluxe model was eligible for the 442 option. Cost of the 442 option was $190.45 on the standard and $156.02 on the Cutlass. This year marked the beginning of 442's with big blocks as standard. (Yippy!) |
