The factory price was $4,195. The two center head lights were an option, which most people opted for--it was the look. The deck lid and hood were fiberglass. The lock pins on the hood were standard, as well as the air scoops. There were also air scoops located ahead of the rear wheels and on the roof quarter panels. On the Mustang fastback (which the GT 500 is based on) the air scoops were louvered. The rear taillights on the GT 500 are rectangular, and very long and slim. But the engine is the whole idea behind the car. That engine is a 428 cid V-8 (7 liters) that Ford rated conservatively at 335 horsepower. A more accurate rating would be somewhere around 550. This is what most people in the preformance car feilds agree on: this car is awesome. It scorches the quarter mile in 13.5 seconds at 106 miles an hour, har a top speed well over 150, and yet purrs like a kitten at a traffic light. That is, untill it turns green. Shelby-the name comes from Carroll Shelby, a Texan and a race car driver. In 1959 Carroll won at LeMans for Aston Martin. From 1962 until 1965 Shelby was slipping Ford's V-8s into British made A.C. Ace bodies. These cars were known as A.C. Cobras. This car coined the word "awsome"! The 1965 version with its 427 V-8 could go from 0-100 and back to zero in ten seconds! Just a simple little 427 V-8 with dual quad Holly carbs. When Ford found out what Shelby was doing, they asked him to help them design a preformance car. The result was the Shelby Mustang biult from 1965 untill 1970. in 1968 -1970 the car was offered as a convertibe, with a roll bar. The Shelby Mustang was everything the A.C. Cobra was not. The GT 500 had roll-up side windows, power steering, a decent heater/defroster, AM/FM stereo radio with a tape deck--creature comforts. The A.C. was avalible only as a roadster, which ment that there were no side widows, plastic curtins were used insted, there were no locking doors, a very small trunk, and the wind in your face. A great image car, but not too pratical for what most people wanted in a car. Ford wanted a vehicle that had more comfort--heat, dryness, no rain in the face, ect. Carroll Shelby beefed up the Mustang suspention, put 15-inch high-preformance tires on the car, re-defined the fastback design, added a monster engine, used some pearlescent paint--and gave Ford the GT 500. |
