The Knox Mine Disaster - 45th Anniversary Events

On Thursday, January 22, the Greater Pittston Historical Society will present a series of events commemorating the 45th anniversary of the Knox Mine Disaster.  At 3 p.m., an exhibit on the tragedy will open at the Pittston Hospital Conference Room on the second floor of the Overlook Professional Center, 200 Overlook Drive, Pittston.  At 4:30 p.m., weather permitting, Fr. Hugh McGroarty will preside over a candlelight vigil at the site of the disaster in Port Griffith.  Next, at 6 p.m., in the Conference Room, a slideshow presentation will be given by Dr. Bob Wolensky, noted co-author of the book 'The Knox Mine Disaster.'  Refreshments and snacks will be provided.  Lastly, at 7 p.m., survivors of the disaster and family and friends of the deceased will meet for an open discussion on the topic.  The public is welcome to attend these events.  For more information, call John Dziak of the Historical Society at 430-3361.

On Saturday, January 24, the Anthracite Heritage Museum in McDade Park, Scranton, will present a special program on the Knox disaster.  Beginning at 2 p.m., the program will include eyewitness accounts, film and photography, and a new song written about the infamous event.  For more information, call the Anthracite Heritage Museum at 963-4804.

Additionally, a mass in remembrance of the victims and survivors of the Knox tragedy will be held at 9 a.m., Sunday, January 25, at St. Joseph's Church, Pittston.
