North Wales Singles Tournament In the recent singles tournament there were some interesting results, this was because we combined the girls and boys events after sickness forced a quite a few withdrawals. In the U-11 event, the winner was Daniel Font (Flintshire) who beat Joe Travers (Flintshire) 15-8, 15-6 in the final. Sion Griffiths and Christopher Roberts (both Conwy) were the beaten semi-finalists. Christopher reached the semi-finals after beating Stephanie Marti-Jones (Conwy) in the quarter-finals, Stephanie was the runner-up in her group of boys. Giorgia Hughes who has just had her 9th birthday was the 2nd girl to play in the boys event coming 4th in her group.
In the U-13 boys event, three Welsh squad players progressed out of the group stages and were placed into the boys A event. This put Andrew Dawson, Dafydd Hughes and Daniel Williams (all Anglesey) in a head to head. In the 1st game Dafydd beat Andrew 15-8, 15-2. Andrew then withdrew from the competition with a reoccurrence of a knee problem that has plagued him for the last 2 months. The final was between Dafydd and Daniel. Dafydd and Daniel play doubles together and are the best of friends, but once you start the match there can only be one winner. This actually was a very good game with the form book being turned upside down with Daniel winning the event 15-10, 2-15, 15-10.
In the U-13 B event, Ben Travers (Flintshire) beat Ross Thomas (Flintshire) 15-11, 17-14 in the final. This game was a battle royal with both players totally committed to covering the court. Ross Thomas beat Jamie Lea (Flintshire) 15-7 in the 1st semi-final with Ben beating Iwan Griffiths (Conwy) 15-10 in the 2nd semi-final. This was a magnificent result for Iwan, to reach the semi-finals in his first ever tournament is praise enough but Iwan has only been playing badminton for 3 weeks, well done Iwan. With this achievement, Iwan has been invited to the Conwy County centre of development coaching sessions. Carl Hughes and Joanne Harrison (both Conwy) were both runners-up in their respective groups and reached the quarter-final stage.
In the U-15 girls B event the winner was Katie Owen (Denbighshire) who proved too strong for the group winning the event quite easily. The runner-up was Kate OConnor (Conwy) another player playing in their first ever tournament.
In the U-15 boys A event the winner was Christopher Pickard who defeated Rohit Srinivasan 15-8, 8-15, 15-13 in the final game. Rohit and Chris both defeated Philip Eastwood (Conwy) which made Rohit the runner-up.
The U-15 boys B event was won by a girl with another girl being the runner-up and what a final this turned out to be. Caroline Harvey (Flintshire) beat Laura Hartley-Williams (Conwy) in the final 13-11, 11-7. Laura actually served for the 1st game, a game that was a long titanic struggle as neither of the girls could break down the other with the score only increasing by one or two points at a time, well done to both girls. Caroline beat Christopher Jones (Flintshire) 15-0 in the 1st semi-final with Laura beating Sebastian Owen (Conwy) 15-7 in the 2nd semi-final.
Caroline, after winning the U-15 boys B event then went on to win the U-17 girls event beating Ellen Bettaney in the final and if that wasnt enough she then played in the U-17/19 boys event where she came 3rd in her group defeating two boys to get there.
The event was won by U-17 player Nick Strange (Conwy) who defeated U-19 player Chifong Chan (Conwy) 17-14, 15-9 in the final. Chifong beat David Wilkins (Conwy) 15-8 in the 1st semi-final and Nick defeated Matthew Owen (Conwy) 15-3 in the 2nd semi-final. Chris Pickard the winner of the U-15 A event was third in his group defeating two U-17 players in the group and only lost the semi-final spot after losing his last game 15-14.
North Wales Satellite Series
The 2nd event of the 4 series tournament took place in Rhyl.
In the U-11 Girls singles, the top seed Stephanie Marti-Jones (Great Orme) had to withdraw from the event after only playing two games, this left the group open to a new winner. Lisa Hother (Llanfairfechan) was the runner-up, Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme) was 3rd in the group with Zoe Hother (Llanfairfechan) 4th. In the overall North Wales points table after two events, Stephanie drops to 2nd place, Lisa is 3rd, Zoe is 4th and Giorgia is 5th. Sebastian Owen (Llanrwst) reached the quarter-finals, James Hawley (Stella Maris) reached the 1st round of the knock-out stage but was beaten by an eventual semi-finalist. Gareth Allsupp (Llanrwst) was 3rd in his group, Matthew Roberts and Sam Rathbone (Great Orme) were both 4th in their groups and Michael Evans (Stella Maris) was 5th in his group. James and Michael were 2nd in their group which put them into a quarter-final game against the 2nd seeded pair. This pair foolishly went home without checking their position which gave James and Michael a semi-final game and the ranking points that goes to the semi-finalists. Matthew and Sam were 3rd in their group.

November 16th - 6th James Wiseman Seniorr Open Tournament
The James Wiseman Senior Open Tournament was resurrected after an absence of 3 years to continue the rich vein of tournaments held in Conwy County, North Wales. In a senior tournament it was good to see 9 juniors competing, going into a tournament knowing they were not going to win, but to put themselves on the line to see how far they can go and how many points they can win. The girls had to play against top seed Nikki Cottrill (Great Orme) an ex Junior International player and the boys had to play against Neil Cottrill (Great Orme) a current International player, both players they would never compete against in normal tournament/competitive play, (not including Great Orme club nights where the Great Orme juniors do play against Neil and Nikki and all the other Great Orme County players).
To all the junior players; well done. Rohit Srinivasan (Great Orme) who at 13 years old played the eventual runner-up and a beaten semi-finalist. To the junior players who actually played Nikki and Neil, the score is irrelevant the experience was what counted. Mark Chan (Stella Maris) against Neil Cottrill in the 1st semi-final, Mark played a hard game and he fought to the very end to improve his score, what he did not do, was give it up as a lost cause. Throughout the tournament there were very hard fought games in which the winner was not known until the last point. Nick Strange and Steven Gibbons (Great Orme/Stella Maris) who beat Mark Chan and Chifong Chan (Stella Maris) 17-14, this was an U-17 pair beating an U-19 pair. Mark Chan (Stella Maris) beating Nick Strange (Great Orme) 13-15, 15-7, 15-13. The 2nd game of the semi-finals between 2nd seed Paul McCracken (Flintshire) and Carl Crossfield (Great Orme), after a poor 1st game Carl buckled down to give the 2nd seed a very different game in the 2nd.
Other games : In the ladies singles, Leanne Mason (Great Orme) v Laura Hartley-Williams (Great Orme) in which Leanne won 11-6, 11-8. This was a match between two 13 year old girls of different styles. In the ladies doubles, Leanne and Laura playing together, as yet did not have the court experience to beat the mother and daughter pairing of Julie and Hayley Turner (Stella Maris). Leanne then played with her brother Anthony (Great Orme) to gain revenge over Julie and Hayley, to become the runners-up in the mixed doubles defeating Hayley playing with Steven Gibbons and Julie playing with Chifong Chan.
October 28th - Youngsters Anthony Mason and Nik Strange both (GOBC) won the Association Senior Mens Doubles beating Andy Goulding and Steve Danzi , who were on a stiff handicap, in the final.

Stephanie and Giorgia lost the final of the U-11 Girls doubles to Lisa & Zoe Hother 2-11, 11-2, 11-4 . Sarah Jones beat her doubles partner Aimee Danzi to win the U-13 Girls singles. Sarah beat Catrin James (Mold, Flintshire) 11-1, 11-2 in the 1st semi-final with Aimee beating Zoe Moorcroft (Flint, Flintshire) 4-11, 11-9, 11-3 in the 2nd semi-final. Sarah & Aimee then won the doubles event beating Hannah Hogan & Catrin James (Mold, Flintshire) in the final group game. In the U-13 Boys singles Kristian Edge reached the semi-finals where he played and lost to the eventual winner Andrew Jones (Connahs Quay, Flintshire) 15-3, 15-10 Jamie Hogan was 3rd and Carl Hughes was 4th in their respective groups. Kristian and Carl playing together for the 1st time were 3rd in the boys doubles. Next event in the North Wales series will be held in Rhyl, Denbighshire.
The Junior Shuttle Series is a higher standard series of tournaments running throughout Wales and is on open event.
In the U-11 Girls singles, Stephanie Marti-Jones was 3rd in the group although she did beat one of the semi-finalists in the group games. Giorgia Hughes was 4th in the group even after beating Stephanie Marti-Jones in the group games. Christopher Roberts playing in his first tournament was 4th in his group of the U-11 Boys singles because he lost his last match 15-14 overall this was a good result for him. Christopher did however taste success winning the U-11 boys doubles final playing with Jonathon Savory (Flintshire). In the U-13 Girls singles, Sarah Jones was 3rd in her group which contained the eventual winner and Joanne Harrison was 4th in her group which contained the eventual runner-up.
