The last Junior tournament of the season was played on Sunday 23rd March 2003.
The tournament, the Jim Wiseman development singles, was for players who had not qualified for the shuttle series finals or who were new to the sport. 28 players representing 4 clubs competed.
In the U-9 boys/U-11 girls event, Ben Griffiths (Llanrwst) was the winner of the boys event with Dafydd Hughes (Llanrwst) the runner-up. Lauren Miles (Great Orme) won the girls event after beating Dafydd in the 1st semi-final and Ben in the final. Lowri Lee (Great Orme) was the runner-up after losing to Ben in the 2nd semi-finals.
Gethin Evans (Llanrwst) won the U-11 boys event beating Darren Pierce (Ysgol Pen y Bryn) 15-11 in the final. Gethin beat Said Ali (Ysgol Pen y Bryn) in the 1st semi-final, Darren beat Sam Roberts (Ysgol Pen y Bryn) in the 2nd semi-final.
Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme) won the U-13 girls event. Giorgia beat Stephanie Mason (Great Orme) in the final. Melanie Roberts (Llanrwst) and Helen Rimmer (Great Orme) both reached the semi-finals.
Josh Hodgekinson (St Davids) won the U-13 boys event after a thrilling final against Ioan Charlton (Llanrwst). Josh had beaten Joel Miles (Great Orme) and Ioan beat Sion Gwyn (Llanrwst) in the semi-finals.

Flint v Great Orme v South Glamorgan
The Great Orme club had two teams competing in the above event, an event that had 20 Welsh National Squad players, playing.
The Great Orme club had 4 National squad players; Flint had 9 and South Glamorgan 7.
The U-13 team was Danial Islam, Andrew Dawson, Aimee Danzi and Philip Eastwood (Stella Maris). Sarah Jones had to withdraw through illness so the Great Orme club played with guest players, Bethan Dixon and Amy Paton (Flint and both U-11)
The U-15 team was Nick Strange, Rohit Srinivasan, Leanne Mason, Laura Hartley-Williams, Aimee Danzi and Philip Eastwood (Stella Maris)
The Great Orme clubs U-13 team was 2nd to Flint after beating South Glamorgan;
The U-15 team was 3rd losing both their matches.

North Wales Satellite Series Bangor Tournament
U-11 Girls singles
Lisa Hother (Llanfairfechan) maintained her grip on the North Wales title when she won her 3rd tournament, in Bangor. Lisa, the top seed and points table leader, beat Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme) in the final. To get to the final, Lisa had to beat her sister (Zoe) in the 1st semi-final whilst Giorgia beat the 2nd seed, Amy Paton (Flint) in the 2nd semi-final. Tara Moorcroft (Flint) and Sara Ijaz (Eryri) were both 3rd in their groups.
U-11 Girls doubles
Lisa and Zoe Hother won the event beating Amy Paton & Tara Moorcroft
8-11, 11-5, 11-6 and remain at the top of the points table.
U-11 Boys singles
As with Lisa in the girls event, Joe Travers (Flint) won his 3rd tournament in Bangor defeating Alex Graham (Mold) 11-7, 11-7 in the final. Sam MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) and Nathan Stewart (Plas Coch) were the beaten semi-finalists.
Sion Griffiths (Llanrwst), Ben Griffiths (Llanrwst), Ben Woolfendon (Llanfairfechan) and Gethin Evans (Llanrwst) all reached the quarter-finals. Adam Stewart (Plas Coch) had to play his brother Nathan in the 1st round knockout with Nathan winning and progressing into the semi-finals.
U-11 Boys doubles
Joe Travers (Flint) & Sam MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) won their 2nd tournament defeating Alex Graham (Mold) & Ben Woolfendon (Llanfairfechan) in the final game. Nathan & Adam Stewart (Plas Coch) were 3rd.
U-13 Girls singles
Aimee Danzi (Great Orme) won her 1st singles tournament beating her doubles partner Sarah Jones (Great Orme). Sarah maintained 1st place in the four tournament points table but only by 6 points over Aimee. Zoe Moorcroft was 3rd, Louise Lee (Flint) was 4th with Joanne Harrison (Great Orme) 5th. Joanne, however, beat Louise in the group game, Louise being the only girl to beat Aimee.
U-13 Girls doubles
Sarah & Aimee won the event and are now unbeaten in the tournament series.
Zoe Moorcroft & Louise Lee were the beaten finalist
U-13 Boys singles
Ben Travers (Flint) won the event after a very close final against Gareth Oates (Flint) winning 15-11, 13-15, 15-13. Ben moves into 2nd place in the points table behind Gareth. Ben beat Andrew Jones (Connahs Quay) in the 1st semi-final with Ben beating Ross Thomas (Flint) in the 2nd semi-final. Kristian Edge (Great Orme) and Dion Llyr Williams (Eryri) both reached the quarter-finals. Nathan Pritchard (Llanfairfechan), Lee MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) and Callam Stronach (Great Orme) were all 3rd in their groups. Carl Hughes (Great Orme) and Ioan Charlton (Llanrwst) were 4th in their groups.
U-13 Boys doubles
Three pairs Ben Travers & Ross Thomas, Gareth Oates & Andrew Jones and Kristian Edge & Lee MacKenzie all ended the tournament winning 3 games and losing 1.
Ben & Ross were beaten by Kristian & Lee. Kristian & Lee were beaten by Gareth & Andrew. Gareth & Andrew were beaten by Ben & Ross.
The event was decided on points with Ben & Ross winning the event with 59 points,
1 point better than Gareth & Andrew, Kristian & Lee were 3rd with 49 points.
U-15 Girls singles
In this event it was the turn of girls from Denbighshire to win the honours. Sarah De Longa (Ruthin) won the event beating Jane Jones (Llangollen) 6-11, 11-5, 11-3 in the final. Jane beat the top seed Katie Owen (Denbigh) in the 1st semi-final and Sarah beat Jenny Evans (Ruthin) in the 2nd semi-final. Carly Bates and Becca Driffield
(both Mold) were 3rd in their group.
U-15 Girls doubles
Katie & Jane won the doubles event beating Jenny & Sarah De Longa in the final game. Carly & Becca were 3rd and Lisa Thomas & Sarah Shephard (Eryri) were 4th.
U-15 Boys singles
Will Melvin (Llanferres) won the event by beating John Jones (Llangollen) in the final. This win moves Will to the head of the points table. Sam Clough (Llanferres) and Danial Attree (Llangollen) both reached the semi-finals. Nicholas Woodcock (Llanferres), Jamrs Hawley (Stella Maris), Danial Ward (Ruthin) and Craig Barlow (Llangollen) all made the quarter-finals.
U-15 Boys doubles
Sam Clough & Will Melvin went to the top of the points table after their win in this event. In the final they beat Matthew Williams & Benjamin Betts
(Plas Coch/Buckley) 12-15, 15-7, 17-16.
Liam Fookes & Sebastian Shapland (Ruthin) and Danial Attree & John Jones (Llangollen) were the beaten semi-finalists.

Conwy County Badminton Association Junior Championships.
Players from the Great Orme club took 6 of the 7 titles in the recent Junior Championships.
The U-11 girls singles was the event won by the Llanfairfechan player, Lisa Hother, with her sister Zoe the runner-up. Stephanie Marti-Jones (Great Orme) was 3rd with Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme) 4th.
The final of the U-11 boys singles was a hard fought game between Christopher Roberts (Great Orme) and Sam MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan). The winner was Christopher beating Sam 15-13, 17-15. Lee Blundell (Great Orme) was 3rd.
The U-13 girls singles final was a re-run of the boys event with Sarah Jones (Great Orme) beating Aimee Danzi (Great Orme) 11-9, 11-10. Lisa Hother who is a U-11 was a creditable 3rd.
Daniel Islam (Great Orme) won the U-13 boys singles beating Lee MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) in the final. Daniel beat Samuel Pearce (Great Orme) in the 1st semi-final and Lee beat Kristian Edge in the 2nd semi-final. Chris Turton (Great Orme) and Nathan Pritchard (Llanfairfechan) were both 3rd in their group; Michael Turton (Great Orme) and Chris Petch (Great Orme) were both 4th.
Leanne Mason (Great Orme) won the U-15 Girls singles beating her doubles partner Laura Hartley-Williams (Great Orme) in the final.
In the U-15 Boys singles, the event was won by Rohit Srinivasan (Great Orme) who beat Daniel Islam (Great Orme) in the final. James Hawley (Stella Maris) was 3rd; Matthew Roberts (Great Orme) was 4th with Luke OMahoney (Eirias High School) 5th.
In the U-17 boys singles, Nick Strange who has just been accepted into the Welsh National U-17 A squad won the event beating Rohit Srinivasan (Great Orme) in the final. Steffan Whiteley (Great Orme) was 3rd.
North Wales Junior Shuttle Series, Zonal Tournament.
U-13 Boys
In the singles, Daniel Islam (Great Orme) and Andrew Dawson (Great Orme) were both 3rd in their respective groups. In his group, Daniel had the eventual winner, Michael Mellor (Merseyside) and the runner-up, Philip Godfrey (West Glamorgan) whilst Andrew had a losing semi-finalist and the current National Champion, Damian Dodd (Flintshire) in his group.
In the level doubles, Daniel & Andrew reached the quarter-finals but lost to Luke Price & Thomas Spurrier with a creditable 17-14 score.
U-15 Girls
Leanne Mason (Great Orme) and Laura Hartley-Williams (Great Orme) both had to withdraw from the tournament due to illness.
U-15 Boys
In the singles, Rohit Srinivasan (Great Orme) reached the quarter-finals but lost to the 2nd seed, Ashley Dixon (Flintshire).
In the level doubles, Rohit partnered Damian Dodd (Flintshire) to a quarter-final place where they lost to Ashley Dixon & Gary Roberts (Flintshire). Ashley & Gary had previously beaten the 3rd seeds to gain their quarter-final place.
In the U-15 mixed doubles, Rohit played with Sian Houdmont (South Glamorgan) to a quarter-final place.
U-17 Boys
Nick Strange (Great Orme) reached all three finals winning two of them.
In the singles he lost to Gary Roberts (Flintshire). In the level doubles he was partnered with Gary Roberts to win the event beating Ashley Dixon & Chris Pickard (Flintshire) and in the mixed he played with Laura Parry (Flintshire) to beat Chris Pickard & Katie Roberts (Flintshire).
Senior National Championships
The 2003 Welsh Senior National Championships took place this year in Wrexham. Conwy County had 9 players representing 3 clubs competing. From the Great Orme club there was Neil Cottrill, Carl Crossfield, Steve Danzi. Anthony Mason (U-19), Nick Strange (U-16), Nikki Cottrill and Karen Roberts, from the Llanfairfechan club Andy Goulding and from Stella Maris Richard Eastwood.
In the Mens singles, Anthony Mason was beaten by Jo Morgan (S.Wales) and Carl Crossfield was beaten by Michael Lewis (S.Wales)
In the Mens doubles, Neil Cottrill playing with Matthew Sprake (Flintshire U-19) reached the final but lost to the top seeds Matthew Hughes and Martyn Lewis who
are currently ranked 23rd in the World. Neil and Matthew had previously beaten the 2nd seeds Dayle Blencoe & Irwansyah in the semi-finals.
In group 2, three of the five pairs playing, were Conwy County pairs. Richard Eastwood (Stella Maris) & Andy Goulding (Llanfairfechan) reached the quarter-finals by beating Karl Jones & David Clough (Flintshire) Steve Danzi & Anthony Mason (Great Orme) and Carl Crossfield & Nick Strange (Great Orme) but losing to the 2nd seeds, Dayle Blencoe & Irwansyah. In the quarter-final they were beaten by National squad players, Liam Ingram & Richard Williams. There was a Great Orme club battle in which Steve & Anthony beat Carl & Nick 21-20.
In the Ladies doubles, Nikki Cottrill & Karen Roberts (Great Orme) reached the semi-finals. In their group they had to play the top seeds and World ranked 9th pairing of Joanne Muggeridge & Felicity Gallup. In their semi-final match they played Kelly Morgan & Robyn Ashworth. Kelly is Waless best ever ladies player having won 13 consecutive singles titles, she is still only 27 and who won the 1998 Commonwealth gold medal.
In the mixed doubles, Neil Cottrill & Robyn Ashworth (S Glam) reached the semi-finals but were beaten by the Welsh International pairing of Martyn Lewis & Felicity Gallup. Steve Danzi & Karen Roberts also played Martin & Felicity in their group of four. Carl Crossfield & Nikki Cottrill had another International pair, Liam Ingram & Kerry Ann Sheppard, topping their group.
To put the results into perspective, all our players are either at school or have full time employment, playing against full time professional players who play the World circuit of tournaments.
January 2003
North Wales Satellite Series Wrexham Tournament results
Lisa Hother (Llanfairfecan) won the U-11 Girls singles. Lisa leads the points table which will guarantee her an invitation to the North Wales final and should lead to an invitation to the All Wales finals in Cardiff. Zoe Hother (Llanfairfechan) reached the semi-finals where she was beaten by her sister. Zoe is 4th in the table out of 8 players. Lisa and Zoe then won the U-11 Girls doubles and lead the points table.
Sam MacKenzie was the runner-up in the U-11 Boys singles beaten by his doubles partner, Joe Traver (Flint) in the final. Sam is 3rd in the points table of 14 players. Sion Griffiths (Llanrwst) reached the quarter-finals but lost to Sam MacKenzie 11-10. Sion is 6th in the table. Gethin Evans (Llanrwst) was 3rd in his group and is = 8th in the table.
Sam and Joe were the runners-up in the U-11 Boys doubles and are 2nd in the points table.
In the U-13 Girls singles, Sarah Jones (Great Orme) won the event and goes back to the top of the points table of 13 players. Aimee Danzi (Great Orme) reached the semi-finals where she was beaten by her doubles partner and club mate, Sarah. Aimee is 2nd in the points table.
Sarah and Aimee then won the U-13 Girls doubles and remain in 1st place on the points table of 5 girls doubles pairs.
Kristian Edge (Great Orme) reached the quarter-finals of the U-13 Boys singles losing the game 11-9. Kristian is = 4th in the points table of 27 players. Lee MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) was 3rd in his group and is 8th in the points table. Ioan Charlton (Llanrwst) was 4th in his group and is = 23rd in the table.
Kristian and Lee were 4th in the group games but remain in 2nd place in the points table of 7 pairs.
In the U-15 Boys singles, James Hawley (Stella Maris) reached the 1st round of the knockout stage where he was beaten 11-10. James is 11th in the points table of 34 players. Matthew Roberts (Great Orme) also reached the 1st round and is 15th in the points table.

Conwy County Junior Championships on Saturday 22nd February
North Wales Satellite Series Bangor event on Sunday 23rd February
Conwy County Badminton Association will be represented at the Welsh Senior National Championships with 9 players from 3 clubs.

Junior National Championships
The Welsh Junior National Championships, which is the premier event in Wales, took place in Wrexham with 15 Conwy County players competing.
In the U-11 Girls singles all our players went out in the 1st round.
Stephanie Marti-Jones (Great Orme) was beaten by the top seed and eventual National Champion, Sarah Thomas (S Wales) Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme) was beaten by S.Ttophi (S Wales) Zoe Hother (Llanfairfechan) was beaten by A Palmer (S Wales) and Lisa Hother (Llanfairfechan) was beaten by the 2nd seed H Killick (S Wales).
Lisa had the consolation of winning the plate event, the event for the 1st round losers. Lisa and Zoe were 3rd in their Girls doubles group and Stephanie and Giorgia were 4th in their group.
In the U-11 Boys singles, Sam MacKenzie lost to Daniel Font (Flint) who was the eventual runner-up. Sam played with Sam Gorrell (S Wales) and won the U-11 Boys doubles National Championship.
In the U-13 Boys singles, Daniel Islam (Great Orme) met the top seed in the 1st round. Daniel was beaten by the eventual National Champion, Damian Dodd (Flint). Leanne Mason (Great Orme) reached the quarter-finals of the U-13 Girls singles. Leanne played the top seed and eventual runner-up S.Davies (S Wales) but was beaten in a long contest 13-10, 13-10. Laura Hartley-Williams (Great Orme) lost to semi-finalist, Sian Houdmont (S Glamorgan). Leanne and Laura were 4th in their group in the U-15 Girls doubles.
In the U-15 Boys singles, Philip Eastwood (Stella Maris) lost to Gary Roberts (Flint). Rohit Srinivasan (Great Orme) last seasons U-13 National Champion reached the quarter-finals where he was beaten by the eventual National Champion, Ashley Dixon (Flint) Rohit and Philip were 3rd in their group in the U-15 Boys doubles. Rohit then played mixed doubles with Sian Houdmont. Rohit and Sian last seasons U-13 National Champions lost their quarter-final to the eventual National Champions, but the score was a very creditable 11-8.

Nick playing with Gary Roberts (Flint) reached the semi-finals losing 15-10, 15-12 to the eventual runners-up.
In the U-19 event, Chifong Chan (Stella Maris) was beaten by 3 / 4 seed David Roberts (Flint). Mark Chan was beaten by James Phillips (S Wales). Chifong and Mark were 4th in their group in the level doubles.
