January 2004
The North Wales Singles tournament held on Sunday 11th January was an ability based ranking tournament rather than an age group single sex event.
The U-13 Girls event was won by Lisa Hother (Llanfairfechan) who beat Stephanie Marti-Jones (Great Orme) in the final.
3rd was Joanne Harrison (Great Orme) and 4th was Zoe Hother (Llanfairfechan). Joanne and Zoe them played in a B ranking event.
The U-13 boys event was won by Kristian Edge (Great Orme) who beat Joe Travers (Flint) in the final. Kristiam beat Jonathan Savory (Flint) in the 1st semi-final with Joe beating Lee MacKenzie in the 2nd semi-final with a score of 23-22.
In the 3/4 ranking game Lee beat Jonathan 15-13
3rd in the groups were Sam MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) and Joe Tavers (Flint) 4th in his group was Saad Ali (Great Orme), these players then joined Zoe and Joanne in the B event.
The U-13 B event was won by Sam MacKenzie on points from Zoe Hother after both winning 3 out of 4 games. 3rd was Lloyd Hughes, 4th was Joanne Harrison, 5th was Saad Ali
The U-15 girls A event was won by Hannah Stephenson (Flint) beating Bethan Higginson (Mold) in the final. 3rd was Katie Roberts (Flint), 4th was Aimee Danzi (Great Orme), 5th was Sarah Jones (Great Orme)
The U-15 boys A event was won by Danial Roberts (Flint) who beat Ben Travers (Flint) in the final. The beaten semi-finalists were Gareth Dixon (Flint) and Rohit Srinivasan (Great Orme). In the 3/4 ranking game Gareth beat Rohit, in the 5/6 game Andrew Dawson (Great Orme) beat Benjamin Betts (Flint), in the 7/8 game Philip Eastwood (Stella Maris) beat Sam Pierce (Great Orme)
In the U-17 A event, the overall winner was Gary Roberts (Flint) who beat Sam Elliott (Eryri) in the final. Steffan Whiteley (Great Orme) was 3rd, Hannah Stephenson was 4th in the event but was the winner of the girls section, Bethan Higginson (Mold) was 5th and Laura Hartley-Williams (Great Orme) 6th
In the U-15/17 mixed B event, James Hawley (Stella Maris) was the winner after beating Michael Evans (Stella Maris) in the final. The losing semi-finalists were Harry Owen (Stella Maris) and Rhian Jones (Great Orme), however Rhian did win the girls event.. In the 3/4 ranking games Rhian beat Harry, 5/6 game Lynsey Jones (Great Orme) beat Danial Lalor (Eirias High School), 7/8 game Cassie Lamond (Eirias High School) beat Hannah Lalor (Erias High School).
December 2003
The second Jim Wiseman Development singles tournament was played recently with players from only two clubs competing.
The tournament was set up for the beginner/moderate standard of player in the County of Conwy who do not play in the North Wales Satellite Ability Series.
The U-11 event was a mixture of boys and girls
The winner was Olivia Williams (Great Orme) who beat Michaela Moy (Great Orme) 15-10 in the final. 3rd was Dafydd Evans (Great Orme/Llanrwst) 4th was Ben Griffiths (Llanrwst U-9).
The U-13 girls event was won by Olivia Williams (Great Orme) who beat Melanie Roberts (Llanrwst) 15-9 in the final.
Olivia beat Michaela Moy (Great Orme) 15-6 in the 1st semi-final, Melanie beat Faye Jennings (Great Orme) 15-12 in the 2nd semi-final. 3rd in the groups were Helen Rimmer and Louise Williams (Great Orme) 4th in her group was Katie Owen (Great Orme)
The U-13 boys event was won by Chris Turton (Great Orme) who beat Eric Williams (Llanrwst) 21-5 in the final.
Chris beat Gethin Evans (Great Orme/Llanrwst) in the 1st semi-final, Eric beat Saad Ali (Great Orme) in the 2nd semi-final.
Dafydd Evans (Great Orme/Llanrwst) and Darren Pearce (Great Orme) were both 3rd in their groups. In a play off Dafydd beat Darren 15-14.
Congratulations to all the players on their performances but especially to the players making their tournament debut Michaela Moy, Faye Jennings and Darren Pearce (all Great Orme)
The 3rd Jim Wiseman Development Tournament takes place in March 2004 when an U-15 age group will be introduced.
The next event is the Welsh Junior National Championships, this year held in Cardiff.
The County will be represented by a minimum of 9 players. To date the following players have entered, Rohit Srinivasan, Danial Islam, Nick Strange, Aimee Danzi, Sarah Jones, Giorgia Hughes, Stephanie Marti-Jones, Kristian Edge (all Great Orme) and Philip Eastwood (Stella Maris).

Seven Conwy County players have gained places into the Welsh Badminton Union Junior National Squads.
All the players are members of the Great Orme Badminton Club and are -

Nick Strange
In the space of one week, Nick Strange (Great Orme), has won three titles and was the runner-up in another proving he is the best junior in the County.
In the North West Wales Junior Shuttle Series, Nick, won the U-17 singles and level doubles with Tom Priestley (Shropshire), he then went on to win the Conwy County Association Handicapped tournament with Andrew Chambers (Stella Maris -12) beating the top seeded pair, Rob Ogden and Steve Danzi (Great Orme -12h.) in the 3rd game of a pulsating final. He then missed out a quartet of titles when he lost in the mens doubles final in the James Wiseman senior open now part of the Welsh Senior Circuit 7-15, 15-13, 11-15
Zoe Hother was also a winner in the JSS when she beat Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme) in the 3rd game of a very good final.
October 2003
The first junior tournament of the season took place on the 11th/12th October.
The event was the Ormes Junior Open now a Welsh Badminton Union Junior Shuttle Series Tournament, which attracted an initial entry of 83 players, illness and injuries left a playing entry of 75, however this is the biggest entry the tournament has had.
In the U-11 girls singles, Giorgia Hughes (Conwy) won the event with Aimee Moran (West Glamorgan) as the runner-up.
3rd was Olivia Williams (Conwy)
The U-11 boys singles was won by Sam MacKenzie (Conwy) who beat Alex Graham (North East Wales) 15-12 in the final.

The U-13 boys singles was won by Damian Renshaw (North East Wales) who beat Andrew Jones (North East Wales) in the final.
Semi-finalists were Kristian Edge (Conwy) and Jonathan Savory (North East Wales)
3rd in group were Chris Turton (Conwy) and Michael Johnstone (Liverpool)
4th in group was Ioan Charlton (Conwy)
The U-13 boys doubles was won by Damian Renshaw and Kristian who beat Michael Johnstone and Jonathan Savory.
In the U-13 mixed doubles, Damian Renshaw and Jessica Markey both won their 3rd event when they beat Michael Johnstone and Amy Smith in the final.
3rd were Kristian Edge and Stephanie Marti-Jones.
Phillipa Rogers (Cheshire) won the U-15 girls ingles beating Hannah Stephenson (North East Wales) 3-11, 11-8, 11-0 in the final.
Phillipa beat Katie Roberts (North East Wales) 15-5 in the 1st semi-final and Hannah beat Katie Mitchell (Cheshire) 15-4 in the 2nd semi-final.
Quarter-finalists were Bethan Higginson (North East Wales) and Amanda Rawlings (Shropshire)
3rd in group were Sarah Jones, Aimee Danzi (both Conwy) and Victoria Moran (West Glamorgan)
4th in group were Sarah DeLonga, Jenny Evans and Jane Jones (all North East Wales)
In the doubles Hannah Stephenson gained her revenge teaming up with Katie Roberts to defeat the Cheshire pairing of Phillipa Rogers and Katie Mitchell 21-16 in the final.
Semi-finalists were Sarah Jones and Aimee Danzi (Conwy) and Victoria Moran and Bethan Higginson (West Glamorgan/ North East Wales)
The U-15 boys singles gave the biggest entry with 7 groups competing.
William Donnelly (Cheshire) won the event beating Ross Little (Greater Manchester) in the final. William convincingly beat Andrew Dawson (Anglesey) in the 1st semi-final, Ross had a harder game in beating Rohit Srinivasan (Conwy) 15-12, 15-3 in the 2nd semi-final.
Quarter-finalists were Stewart Preston, Thomas Lees (both Shropshire) Philip Eastwood (Conwy) and Gareth Oates (North East Wales)
1st round were Sam Clough, Ross Thomas (both North East Wales) Matthew Appleby (Shropshire) Dafydd Hughes, Danial Williams (both Anglesey) and Danial Roberts (North East Wales)
3rd in group were Ben Travers, Will Melvin (both North East Wales) Michael Evans, Sam Pierce, James Hawley (all Conwy) Lawrence Owen (Shropshire) and Joshua Roberts (Powys)
4th in group were Andrew Jones, Richie Lloyd, Sean Evans (all North East Wales) Lee MacKenzie, Kristian Edge (both Conwy)
The U-15 boys doubles was won by the Cheshire/Greater Manchester pairing of William Donnelly and Ross Little who defeated a scratch pairing of Danial Roberts (North East Wales) and Andrew Dawson (Anglesey) in the final.
Semi-finalists were Rohit Srinivasan and Joshua Roberts (Conwy/Powys) and Thomas Lees and Simon Preston (Shropshire)
Quarter-finalists were Sam Clough and Will Melvin (North East Wales) and Matthew Appleby and Lawrence Owen (Shropshire)
3rd in group were Andrew Jones and Sean Evans (North East Wales) Lee MacKenzie and Gareth Oates (Conwy/Flintshire) Danial Williams and Dafydd Hughes (Anglesey)
4th in group were Ross Thomas and Ben Travers (North East Wales) James Hawley and Michael Evans (Conwy)

Caroline Harvey (North East Wales) won the U-17 girls singles beating Laura Hartley-Williams (Conwy) 3-11, 11-4, 11-5 in then final.
3rd was Leanne mason (Conwy)

3rd was Sam Elliott and Leanne Mason (Arfon/Conwy)
The chwarae teg award, given as a recognition of their fair play and decided by the umpires, was given to U-15 girl Katie Mitchell (Chester, Cheshire) and U-17 girl Leanne Mason (Conwy)

Jim Wiseman Badminton Development Singles Tournament.
The Jim Wiseman Development Singles is a new tournament aimed at the beginner/moderate player within the County Borough of Conwy.
24 players competed in the 1st of a 3 tournament series, with 20 playing in a tournament for the first time
U-9 Boys was won by Ben Griffiths (Llanrwst) who beat Kieran Jenkins (Great Orme) in the final. Harley Sanders (Great Orme) was 3rd with Elgan Davies (Great Orme) 4th.
In the U-11 Girls and Boys combined event, the overall winner was Olivia Williams (Great Orme) who beat Lauren Miles (Great Orme) in the final. 3rd in the overall event and winner of the boys section was Dafydd Evans (Great Orme & Llanrwst) with James Galston (Stella Maris) 4th.
The U-13 Girls event was won by Melanie Roberts (Llanrwst) who beat the U-11 winner Olivia Williams (Great Orme) in the final.
Melanie beat Helene Villalone (Great Orme) in the 1st semi-final with Olivia beating Hannah Lalor (Eirias High School) in the 2nd semi-final. Laura Williams and Katie Owen (both Great Orme) reached the quarter-finals.
Chris Turton (Great Orme) won the U-13 Boys event beating Eric Williams (Llanrwst) in the final.
Chris beat Gethin Evans (Great Orme & Llanrwst) in the 1st semi-final with Eric beating Ben White (Eirias High School) in the 2nd semi-final.
Saad Ali (Great Orme) and Lee Coates (Eirias High School) both reached the quarter-finals.

All Wales Satellite Series Finals
The All Wales Satellite Series finals were contested recently in Cwmbran, South Wales.
The satellite series was set up 3 years ago as the first step onto the tournament circuit.
Sarah Jones of the Great Orme Badminton Club became the first Conwy player to win an event, when she won the U-13 Girls singles. Sarah and her partner, Aimee Danzi (Great Orme) were the runners-up in the U-13 Girls doubles.
Aimee reached the semi-finals of the U-13 Girls doubles where she played her doubles partner, Sarah.
Kristian Edge (Great Orme) and Lee MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) reached the semi-finals of the U-13 Boys doubles.
Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme) reached the quarter-finals of the U-11 Girls singles where she was beaten by the eventual runner-up 13-10. This was a good result for Giorgia as she is only 9 years old and her performance brought her to the notice of the Welsh Badminton Union Talent Identification scouts.
Lisa Hother (Llanfairfechan) reached the semi-finals of the U-11 Girls singles where she also lost to the eventual runner-up 13-10 and playing with her sister Zoe (Llanfairfechan) was the runner-up in the U-11 Girls doubles
Sam MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) also had a good tournament playing in the U-11 Boys doubles.

2003 North Wales Satellite Finals
The 2003 North Wales Satellite Finals was played on the 17th May with 13 Conwy County juniors involved.
All the 9 local players that progressed into the semi-finals will be invited to Cwmbran for the all Wales finals.
U-11 girls singles was won by Lisa Hother (Llanfairfechan). Lisa, the top seed, beat Stephanie Marti-Jones (Great Orme) in the final after losing to her in their group games.
In the semi-finals Stephanie beat the second seed, Amy Paton (Flintshire) whilst Lisa beat Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme).
Zoe Hother (Llanfairfechan) was 3rd in her group.
U-11 boys singles, Sam MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) reached the semi-finals where he was beaten by the second seed Aaron Griffiths (Flintshire)
Lloyd Hughes (Stella Maris) and Sion Griffiths (Llanrwst) were both 3rd in their groups and Gethin Evans (Llanrwst) was 4th in his group.
Sam went one stage better in the U-11 boys doubles when he and his partner Joe Travers (Flintshire) reached the finals, but were beaten by Alex Graham and Aaron Griffiths (Flintshire).
In the U-13 girls singles, the event was won by Sarah Jones (Great Orme) with Aimee Danzi (Great Orme) reaching the semi-finals. Sarah and Aimee as the North Wales points leaders will be invited to play in the girls doubles.
In the U-13 boys singles, Kristian Edge (Great Orme) and Lee MacKenzie (Llanfairfechan) were both 3rd in their groups. Kristian and Lee will be invited to Cwmbran after reaching the finals of the U-13 boys doubles. In the final they played Ben Travers & Ross Thomas (Flintshire) the top seeds, who they beat in the group games.
