GOBC NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2008
 
 
The first WBU junior tournament  took place in Deganwy on the 4th / 5th October 2008. The JSS series is now scored the same way as a Badminton England Silver Tournament and that is, all games are now best of three.
 
In the U-11 age group Conwy had two players competing in the boys singles, Joe Cottrill and Ben Shacklady (both Great Orme) Ben was third in his group losing to two North East Wales players. Joe reached the semi-finals but lost to Andrew Oates (North East Wales) 15-4, 14-16, 15-11.
Joe and Ben then played together and were third in the group in the boys doubles.
 
In the U-13 age group Conwy had one player competing in the boys singles, Connor Hughes (Great Orme). Connor won the event beating Ben Ashley (Shropshire) in the semi-final and Elliott Wheeler (North East Wales) in a thrilling 31 minute final, 13-21, 22-20, 21-16.
 
In the U-15 age group Conwy had one player competing in the boys singles, Dafydd Evans (Llanrwst). Dafydd was third in his group losing to Andrew Phillips (Cheshire) 15-11, 15-12 and Rohan Hemmadi (South Glamorgan) 6-15, 15-14, 10-15. Dafydd then played with Matthew Vacher (North East Wales) and was third in the group with two of the three matches going to three games. This was a good result as the group contained two Cheshire pairs and a combined Yorkshire / South Glamorgan pair.
 
In the U-17 age group Conwy had six players competing, Stephanie Marti-Jones, Lauren Miles, Delyth Darlington, Jordan Roberts (all Great Orme) Laura Gurney & Sarah Owen (Stella Maris). Stephanie won the U-17 girls singles beating Danielle Oates (North East Wales) in the final. Lauren  won her group and reached the semi-finals but lost to Danielle 15-10, 15-13. Laura, Sarah and Delyth were all third in the groups.
Jordan was fourth in his group that contained the eventual winner and runner-up.
In the U-17 girls doubles, Conwy had another winner when Lauren Miles and Delyth Darlington (Great Orme) won the event beating Danielle Oates and Danielle Schoneveld (North East Wales) 15-9, 10-15, 15-13 in the final.
 
Giorgia Hughes (Great Orme) travelled to Switzerland with the Welsh team and competed in the Swiss Open. She reached the semi-finals of two events, the mixed doubles with Oliver Gwilt (Powys) and the girls doubles with a Czech partner.
 
 
 
Conwy hosted the first Satellite Tournament on the 11th/12th October.
 
In the U-11 Girls Singles, Alicia Hazlewood (Stella Maris) reached the semi-finals where she lost to Abigail Wiseman (NEWales). Charlotte Owen (Great Orme) was third in her group. Charlotte and Alicia playing together were third in the U-11 Girls Doubles.
In the U-11 Boys Singles, Joe Cottrill (Great Orme) won his group to reach the quarter-finals. He lost to the eventual runner-up Callum Sant (NEWales) 21-18. Ben Shacklady (Great Orme) and Finlay Jones (Stella Maris) were both fourth in their groups.
 
Alicia Hazlewood (Stella Maris) and Annie Aspinall (Great Orme) both reached the semi-finals of the U-13 Girls Singles, but lost to two North East Wales girls. In the U-13 Girls Doubles, Amber Bradshaw & Lucy Townsend (Stella Maris) won the event beating Alicia Hazlewood & Holly Wilkinson (Stella Maris)
Dean Raymond (Great Orme) reached the semi-finals of the U-13 Boys Singles.
In the U-13 Boys Doubles, Dean Raymond (Great Orme) & Osian Morgan (Stella Maris) and Sam Jones & James Parry (Stella Maris) both pairs reached the semi-finals.
 
In the U-17 Girls Singles, Sarah Collins (Stella Maris) won the event beating Delyth Darlington (Great Orme) 21-15, 13-21, 21-18 in the final game.
Sam Griffiths (Llanrwst) won the U-17 Boys Singles with Jordan Roberts and 12 year old Connor Hughes (both Great Orme) reaching the semi-finals
In the U-17 Boys Doubles it was an all Llanrwst affair when Gethin Evans & Sion Gwyn beat Sam Griffiths & Glyn Tapp in the semi-finals. In the final, they lost to a North East Wales pair 15-14, 15-10.
 
 
UK SCHOOL GAMES
 
Stephanie Marti-Jones and Giorgia Hughes (both Great Orme) have returned from the UK School games, where they both played the some of the best players in the UK.
 
The badminton started with the mixed doubles where Giorgia played with Oliver Gwilt (Powys). In the first match they beat the Scottish pairing of Stuart Sineath & Fiona Archibald 10-21, 21-16, 22-20 and in the second match they lost 14-21, 16-21 to the England pairing of Steven Cappleman & Lauren Bromley who went on to the semi-finals. To put this result into context, Steven Coppleman is ranked second in England and Lauren Bromley 6th. Steph did not play the mixed event.
 
In the girls singles they both won one match and lost two.
Steph played and lost to Sheren Spittal (ranked 4th in Scotland). She then played and lost to Lauren Bromley (ranked 6th in England). She then played and beat Rachel Orr (Northern Ireland)
Giorgia played and lost to Sophie Brown (ranked 5th in England). She then played and lost to Caitlin Pringle (ranked 7th in Scotland). She then played and beat Ruth Roddiss (Northern Ireland).
 
Playing together they played and lost two matches that went to three games. In the first match they played Emma Cook & Shereen Spittal (Scotland) and after winning the first game lost the match 21-17, 25-27, 15-21. In the second game they played Lauren Bromley & Emily Westwood (England) losing the match after winning the first game 21-18, 13-21, 16-21. Emily Westwood is ranked 2nd in England and won the UK School Games girls singles and mixed doubles and was a semi-finalist in the girls doubles. Our girls did well on two counts a) being the only badminton players from Conwy to represent Wales at the prestigious UK School Games and b) to put in the results they achieved against the best players in Great Britain.
