THIS PAGE IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION AS WE GET READY FOR SAVANNAH

Our Birthplace/Savannah Trip

Troop 446 Homepage

We decided we wanted to go to the Birthplace in Savannah, Georgia. We found places of interest and found information on the internet. The summer before going, some of us went with our church youth choir to Savannah and our leader, Angel, went along as a chaperone. While in Savannah, she picked up a lot of brochures for us to look at. We brainstormed and decided on the places and things we wanted to go to. Angel learned about a tour company in Savannah that the agent was a former Girl Scout leader and caters to Girl Scout troops. She contacted them and we ended up with the following activites:

While in Savannah we ate at the Pirate's House, Shuckers, Six Pence, Blimpee's, and had a catered dinner from Mrs. Wilke's Boardinghouse. All were great.

Some of the activities we did were:

Murder Afloat--a Riverboat Cruise with actors putting on scenes where you gathered info to try and figure out "who done it", it's based on the game 'Clue', it was fun.

Birthplace--House Tour; Fashion, Frills and Fabric Special Interest Session-we got to try on corsets (ouch! Glad we don't have to wear them all the time.), learned the proper way to sit and walk, learned about fashion from Juliette's time and fan 'talk'. We had the Victorian Supper, we got to dress up with clothes at the Birthplace, and Thistle was the Hostess!!

Andrew Low House--took a tour of the Andrew Low House as it was the house where Juliette lived in Savannah after her marriage. Patted the Lion's head as Juliette used to.

First Headquarters--the First Headquarters is located behind the Andrew Low House as it is housed in what once was the stables of the house. We stopped a moment outside to enjoy the fountain and rest on a bench. It is known as "Daisy's Garden".

Carriage Ride--we enjoyed a ride in a horse drawn carriage and listening to some of the history of the city.

Squares--the city has 21 squares and each one has historical markers telling about an event/person that the square honors or is named for. We didn't get to all 21 squares but did visit many of them including Chippewa Square made famous by the movie "Forest Gump" which the square is nicknamed for now.

Ghost Walk--a trip to Savannah wouldn't be complete without this trip, we had a great guide, Greg, and he shared history as well as ghost tales along the way. Due to our schedule it was still light when we took this tour so we didn't see any ghosts!

River front--we walked along the river front and visited several shops along the way, we also stopped to see the Waving Girl statue and found the 'site' where Gen. James Oglethrope first landed on Georgia!!

Market Square--in our little free time, we ventured to Market Square, heard the music, checked out the shops (of course!), and saw the sights. Lucky for us it was near our motel.

Tybee Island--we spent a morning at Tybee Island's Lighthouse, we walked the 178 steps to the top--what a view, and visited Fort Screven's museum as well.

Laurel Grove--we visited Laurel Grove where Juliette is buried and did some clean up around the gravesite.

We all agreed we'd like to go back again!! Thistle is thinking about going to college there.
