Sports for Life

Skill Builder:

SB #1: One girl talked to her gym Teacher about proper stretching exercises for snowskiing. She shared this with the group.

SB #3: The girls took a certified lesson before skiing. (The girls already knew how to ski, but the lesson was included in our package. They took the lesson to earn the IPP.)

Technology:

T #1: Visited a sports shop to see clothing available for skiing. Girls that had internet access got ski clothing advertisements from internet and shared with the group. We visited a sports shop before the trip and also checked out the ski shop at the slopes. A nurse talked to them about hypothermia and injury. (She was one of the leaders). They made list of clothing that they needed to take.

T #2: Looked at and discussed reflective sportswear while in sports shop. Bought reflective tape and added to ski jumpers before skiing. (Each girl decided where she thought her tape would be most effective. Some were very interesting placements!)

T #3: Looked at protective gear in sports shop. Discussed with salesperson materials used for gear and also how gear was changing.

T #5: Looked at equipment in sports shop. Discussed with salesperson how gear and equipment was changing.

Service Projects:
SP #1: A sister junior troop went with us. Before the trip, the girls shared their information with them on proper clothing, went over the list that they had made of what to take, and gave them a copy. The juniors also took the ski lesson, but the older girls helped them on the slopes. Most of the juniors were first-time skiers.

Career Exploration:
CE #2: The girls interviewed two ski instructors while on the trip. One instructor was a young lady who was in college, doing the job part-time. She was super nice and spent about 20 minutes discussing her ski experience and certifications.

NOTE: I would like to add that while the Sports for Life IPP seems geared to a cold weather sport, I believe with few changes it could be used for swimming, bowling, basketball, any sport that girls would be interested in pursuing or improving on.
