Richard Taylor, son of Richard and Margrett Taylor, was born 6 Oct 1672.

His family lived near Julian’s Creek in Norfolk County, Virginia. He married Jean(e) Owens, also variously recorded in the records as Jan, Jane, Jenet, Jenat. The will of William Owens, Sr., made 10 Dec 1710 in Norfolk County, proved 18 May 1711, names "my three brothers in Law Edward Daviss, Richard Lewelling and Richard Taylor."

Richard Taylor left a will dated 26 Sep 1729, proved 19 Feb 1730/1 in Norfolk County by John and William Owens [Jr.].

    1. Richard Taylor (of whom more separately), b. c. 1694 Julian Creek, Norfolk Co., VA, md. Dinah ______, and d. c. 1734 Julian Creek, Norfolk Co., VA. Children (at least): Richard Taylor, md. (1) Dinah ______, md. (2) Charlotte ______; Joseph Taylor, md. Nancy [Walker?].

    2. Thomas Taylor.

    3. William Taylor, b. Dec 1702, d. 1771 (wd) 2 Feb 1771, (wp) Apr Ct. 1771, Norfolk Co., VA. William Taylor likely died without issue. His will leaves to his "sister Rachel Nicholas, all my estate." Wit: Richard (X) Owens, Margaret (X) Owens, David Porter.

    4. John Taylor.

    5. Edward Taylor.

    6. Mary Taylor.

    7. Margaret Taylor.

    8. Rachel Taylor, md. ______ Nicholas. Rachel was executor of her brother William Taylor’s estate in 1771.

    Richard Taylor appears on the 1704 quit rent lists for Norfolk County, having 75 acres.

    Richard Taylor witnessed with John Owens, Joseph Fenly, and Richard Lewellen when Richard Lewellen [Sr.?] made his will in Norfolk County in Oct 1722.

20 Oct 1722 – proved 18 May 1723, Norfolk County. Will of Richard Lewellen of Southern branch of Norfolk County. Appoint my … wife Eliza. … Sole Extx … to my … Son Richard Lewellen my plantacon and all the land belonging to it (Except the land I have (torn) my Son Aabel … (torn) Son Richd Should dye wth heirs then she sd pl (torn) to return to my Son Lemuel … my Children … my Little Gunn and Sword … to my Son Leml … alsoe my Little pot that was his brother Edwards … my five daughters … Wit: John Oerngs [Owens?], Richd. Taylor, (torn) ph Fenly. Richard + Lewellen his mark & Seal. Proved by all the witnesses.

    Richard Taylor made his will in Norfolk County on 26 Sep 1729, which was proved 19 Feb 1730/31.

26 Sep 1729 – proved 19 Feb 1730/31, Norfolk County.  Richard Taylor of Elizabeth River in the County of Norfolk in Virginia … to my Son William taylor on Short gune … to my Son John taylor my bible … three wigs … to my Son Edward taylor … my … gune … to my Dafter Mary taylor … larg puter bason … to you Dafter Margret taylor one Larg puter basson … to my Dafter Richal taylor one Large puter basson … wife Jan Taylor be Excutrs … Wit: John Owens, Willa Owens, Thomas Owens (his mark). Richard Taylor (his mark). Proved by John and Wm. Owens.

    On 18 June 1731, Jean Taylor was awarded cost for probating the will of Richard Taylor, she having complied with the law.

 

Land of Jean Taylor Processioned in Dec 1751

    From the vestry book of Elizabeth River Parish, in Dec 1751,
"… the Land of Jno: Oans [Owens] in the Presence of Win: Porter & Willm: Taylor. We por [processioned] the Land of Jno: Oans the Land of Thos: Oans the Land of Win: Oans the Land of Jean Taylor in the Presence of Edward Taylor, William Porter, Jno: Lewellin, Edd: Daivs." The William Taylor and Edward Taylor mentioned were likely sons of Jean Taylor. The Owens men mentioned were likely members of her Owens family.

 

Jenet Taylor Witnesses Will of Joseph Stewart in 1753?

    A William Taylor, Silas Bright, and Jenat (+) Taylor witnessed on 26 Feb 1753 when Joseph Stewart made his will in Norfolk County. She would have been old, but this could have been Jenet Taylor and her son William Taylor witnessing.
