Disclaimer ~ The characters portrayed in this story are in no way mine, and I will return them to their original positions once I am done messing with their lives. The characters of Maura, Matthew, or anyone else you have not seen waltz across your TV on a Thursday night are purely of my own imagination.
Need to Know ~ The last episode that applies to this story is April Showers. Everything up to that point happened, but nothing after it did. Which includes the return of Susan Lewis. Mark has had no recurrences of his brain tumor and is going to be fine. Also, Abby and Luka broke up some time around July of 2001.

Carter and Abby were married as planned on May 27, 2007. Maura was the flower girl and Mark the best man. A year later, on June 9, 2008, their daughter Grace was born. They had two other children after that. Carter remained at County along with Abby. They planned to both retire the same year, but due to a shortage of nurses Abby decided to stay for five more years. They remained happily married the rest of their lives.
Rachel met and married a lawyer named Joseph in 2016. They had two sons named Joshua and Brian. Rachel became a teacher in a public school in St. Louis.
Matthew became a journalist for the Chicago Sun Times after college and published several novels. He met and married a chef named Maureen when he was 29. They had four children.
It took several years for Maura to fully recover from her ordeal. She had frequent night terrors and nightmares until the start of her teen years. It wasn’t until high school that she began to regain a sense of normality that she had lost. She graduated from high school and college with honors. After much debate she became a surgeon at an urban hospital in northeast Philadelphia. After she completed her residency she moved back to Chicago and got a job as an attending at another Chicago hospital. She married a man named Jack when she was 27. They had three children. James was born in February of 2029, Christopher in July 2033, and Elizabeth in March 2035. She never lost touch with her mother.
The man accused of kidnapping Maura was found guilty on three counts and sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance of parole. It was found shortly after his recovery from his car accident that he had also kidnapped several other young girls. Unfortunately, they didn’t get the happy ending Maura did.
Both Mark and Elizabeth remained in Chicago for the rest of their happily married lives. They stayed in close contact with their children and their grandchildren. Elizabeth never fully returned to the way she was before the kidnapping. But like the rest of her family, she moved on, and in time no longer felt the pain she felt before. With the help of Mark and her co-workers, Elizabeth, along with Maura, slowly began to adapt and regained the security that had vanished with the kidnapping.
