Our patterns are designed to reflect the spirit of real Amish or Mennonite quilts in style, design
and color scheme.

Want your quilt to look very Amish? Authentically Amish quilts normally use solid black, dark blue, dark green, or dark brown backgrounds, solids rather than prints, and the use of specific colors; these traits are typical of the quilts the Amish make for use in their own homes.

However, you may notice if you have seen "Amish" quilts in shops, that when making quilts for the tourist trade, Amish quilters use a wide variety of colors and prints, knowing that many of us would find the typical fabrics very dark and / or dull.

Homemade Stitches tries to offer several pattern samples using the traditional colors and blocks, keeping the flavor of the Old Order Amish quilt so that you can get a feel for it . . . others of our samples feature bright prints and some appliqué, such as Mennonite quilts would. Feel free to take the traditional designs of these Amish-inspired patterns, and use the fabrics that will make them your own.
