Did You Know...

"FREE GARBAGE SERVICE" MEANS FREE TO THE COUNTY, NOT FREE TO YOU.

Ask your commissioner if the county plans to waive the yearly fee for your garbage service.  The word we have from the commissioners is that the garbage fee will still be charged to citizens even if there is a landfill in Columbus County.

THE PROPOSED LANDFILL WILL BE HUGE.

The garbage mound would cover 138 acres. Compare that to the Boys and Girls Home Campus at Lake Waccamaw, at about 100 acres.

It would be piled to nearly 200 feet above existing ground level. Compare that to: A mature pine tree, at 75 feet tall; The fire tower on 211, at 110 feet tall; Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, at 192 feet tall.

COLUMBUS COUNTY WASTE IS A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF WHAT WILL GO INTO THE LANDFILL.

The county's daily allotment in the host and franchise agreement is only 2% of the landfill's planned daily input.  The other 98% is waste coming from outside the county.

RIEGEL RIDGE INTENDS TO SELL OUT.

Landfill proponents have said that Riegel Ridge LLC will "own the liability forever", but Riegel Ridge has stated that it's looking for a buyer.

Who will run this landfill, and how do we know they can be trusted?

Contact FRIENDS OF THE GREEN SWAMP  for more that Riegel Ridge and Your Commissioners would rather you did not know.
