Faith (Audrey) Thornton

Ya got a name?   Audrey Thornton,* she responded slowly, pushing a lock of her hair away from her eyes.* Please, don't shorten it or anything. My father used to call me 'Audi'. If you're going to call me by my real name, I prefer Audrey.

Ah, that was an easy one. How bout a REAL name?   *She blinked several times and stared oddly at the person across from her.* That...is my real name.

What about a nickname?   *She offered a smile that was hesitant, but at the same time eager to be more.* Faith,  *she answered in a quiet voice, one that was afraid of scrutiny.*

How'd ya get it?   *She shrugged and looked down at her hands, interested in distracting her eyes so that she did not have to look the inquistor in the face.*  There's a...small story about it. *She hesitated before proceeding.* My parents left me here two years ago. I used to have faith that they'd come back for me. *Her lips quirked into a faint, bitter smile as she tentatively lifted her eyes again* Dusty called me that...Faith I mean. *She shrugged again.* But I still can't help thinking they might come back some day.

How old are ya?   I'm seventeen. Had a birthday last month, actually. *She smiled bitterly.* The second one I've celebrated without my parents. *There was no pride in her
eyes at this fact. If anything there was a lonely tang that had settled, not only on her tongue, but in her eyes as well.*

Whaddaya look like? *receives a 'look' from you* Just answer the question.   *A momentarily puzzled look flickered over her features.* My looks? *she asked, repeating the demand.* Umm...  *she trailed off, pulling a strand of
her hair before her face.* I've got, uh, long, dark red hair. Mother used to say that it's auburn, not red. Auburn. And my eyes, well they're brown...a light
brown. I'd prefer blue or even green, but I got stuck with my father's eyes. I got my tan skin from my father, also. He's a big Italian guy, born and raised. *She paused, getting lost in her thoughts. She blinked after a moment and resumed her talking.* I'd say I'm fairly tall, about 5'7", or 5'8"...something like that. *She gestured absently. She would never call herself pretty, although her red hair did give her an almost exotic flare.*

I'm assuming you have a personality. What's it like?   I don't know, I guess I'm sort of quiet. I like to have fun, though,  *she said this last part rather quickly, almost defending her quiet tendencies.* I can be loud, too, if I want to be. Especially when I'm selling papers, *she added with a bigger smile.* Otherwise, I...I'm a very faithful person. *Her smile faded slightly.*

Ya know your history?   *Her smile remained faint, but she slowly nodded.* I used to live in Virginia with my parents and my younger brother, Nathan. We came up here on vacation two years ago to celebrate my birthday. They sent my brother and I the day we arrived to get ice cream at a local store, but when we came back the place we had rented was empty. *Her smile faded completely and she stared as if she were reliving the incident.* My brother thought they were only playing a trick. We went over to one of our neighbor's to ask if they had seen our parents, but they only looked confused and told us they had seen them leave a half hour ago. *Her shoulders sagged forward.* We tried to buy train tickets back down to Virginia, but we only had a few cents left with us left over from our ice cream money. *She then released a long sigh and stared at her hands as they fidgeted with the sports cap she typically wore, but now held.* We tried to live off stealing, but I got caught and was put in the refuge. *Her eyes held their gaze on her hat.* I don't know what happened to Nate after that, but I haven't seen him since. I tried looking for him here in Greenwich Village  when I got out of the refuge a few months ago, but I haven't been able to find him yet. *She lifted her eyes where tears glistened.* That's why I'm here...in the lodging house, I mean. I needed a job and I needed to be around people to forget my parents and...and my brother.

M-hm. I see. Got any friends or relatives?   I'm a Thornton,  *she said quietly.* We're not exactly the richest family in Virginia, but we're not poor either. Sort of Middle Class in the terms of Virginia's "great" society. *She smiled faintly.*My little brother's name is Nathan. I got separated from him when I was thrown in the refuge for stealing two years ago. The only reason I was there for so long is because I was being 'disruptive'. *She frowned.* I think they just didn't like me. *She shrugged.* Anyway, I have a mother and a father, but they abandoned my brother and I when I was fifteen. *A soft sigh escaped dark pink lips.* They'll come back for us some day. I know they will. *She drew in a deep breath and attempted to brighten the subject.* As for friends, I'm new here in the lodging house, so I don't really know anyone. But I have some friends back from when I was in the Refuge. *She smiled faintly. Even though her time in the Refuge wasn't exactly a cherished memory, she had earned herself a few trustworthy friends that she hoped she would bump into from time to time.*  Fidele Tynan and Dustin Vail were perhaps two of my closer friends, though.

You got a special someone?   *She shook her head.*  No, *she said with a sigh and a wistful look in her eyes.* Though, I wouldn't mind seeing Dusty again. He's an absolute sweetheart! *she gushed, her eyes brightening.* He knows just how to brighten a girl's day!

Anything else you wanna let us know?   *She shook her head, tucking a strand of auburn red behind a rounded ear.* Only that I'm really...brand new at this newspaper selling thing. Very very brand new.
