The Darkness - Permission To Land
My Thoughts: (Dirty Frank)
What comes to mind when you think of The Darkness? A long haired British band with a high pitched lead singer in a skin tight, leopard print leotard singing about love? Well I own this cd, and probably know a lot more about the band and their music than you do. I've heard all of their songs and I've seen clips from their live performances, and do you know what comes to my mind when I think of The Darkness? A long haired British band with a high pitched lead singer in a skin tight, leopard print leotard singing about love.
It's true, this is what they are, but that's not all. Whether some people will accept it or not they are extremely talented musicians. I believe that they once said "We're sure that we'll never become too popular because people will never take us seriously. " At first I thought they were a joke too. But I went out and bought the cd, partly because there's a nude chick on the cover, and partly because I was curious about the music. Let me tell you something, this band is no joke, they're the real deal.
Some say that they're Queen rip-offs. They do resemble the band with the high-pitched lead singer Justin Hawkins, and maybe a couple of the tunes, but it doesn't go much farther than that. If I had to compare them to something I would say a slight mix between Boston and Queen.
Hitting the music scene with their hit "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" it became apparent that they were capable of some catchy tunes and advanced guitar solos. When listening to the album one can quickly determine that they are full of these catchy riffs and upbeat songs. Right off the bat you're hit with the story of "Black Shuck", the beast that overtakes a church and its parishioners. A sort of comical song, as well are many songs on the album, but it is a great song nonetheless. Then your hit with a couple other memorable, sing-a-long songs like "Get Your Hands Off of my Woman" and "Growing on Me", which soon grew on me. And soon after that comes my favorite song on the cd, "Love is Only a Feeling", just a soft, warm love tune that's full of great guitar and vocals. A couple other tracks on the cd to make note of is the drug-shooting tune "Givin' Up" and the upbeat song about dancing, "Friday Night". These are just examples from the album, but every song is unique on its own, and every song is a must hear.
Despite only being 35 minutes long, this is a cd that you can just play over and over again. It got me through many a homework assignment, and many school reading books. For being the band's first cd this is an amazing recording, and I know I'll be awaiting the next one. To sum it up, The Darkness has a great harmony of vocals over incredible guitar riffs and great background music. This is an upbeat cd that is sure to put a smile across your face, and a warm tune in your heart.
