DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story

The Plot:

A small local gym is threatened with extinction by a gleaming sports and fitness palace unless a group of social rejects can rise to victory in the ultimate dodgeball competition. (From Yahoo Movies)

My Thoughts: (Reviewed by Big Pun)

There is something about this kind of movie that when you hear about it or see a trailer for it, your like “Man, that could be so funny, I just hope they don’t screw it up” or “It could be cool, or it could suck major ass too…I just don’t know.” Well, let me help set you straight…this one delivers….Dodgeball is the funniest think I have seen this spring or summer and looks to be matched only by Anchorman in a few weeks.

I don’t know how much of it had to do with the great talents of Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn or if I just find it utterly hilarious seeing people getting drilled in a game of dodgeball, but this movie worked for me…in fact, I will say here that I think Vaughn is grossly underestimated as a comedic actor…his work in films like Swingers, Made, Old School and now Dodgeball puts him up there as one of my favorites…I think some of his dramatic work in shitty movies may have hurt his cred a bit…Stiller is over the top big time in this movie, but it works…in fact its funny as hell…it makes me question if I prefer his deadpan stuff in movies like Meet the Parents or some of his more over the top rolls like the Royal Tenenbaums or Zoolander…either way, he is a funny bastard….

The story is based around Stiller’s character, White Goodman’s Globo Gym and their desire to take over the world…in the way is Vaughn’s Peter LaFleur and his cast of characters of Average Joe’s gym…a cast that includes a guy who thinks he is a pirate…and that stapler guy from OfficeSpace….

Well, Globo Gym is set to take over Average Joe’s if Peter can’t come up with fifty thousand dollars in a few weeks time…the only answer to this dilemma….play Dodgeball in the national tournament to win the money…and in to coach Joe’s rag tag bunch….non other than Patches O’Houlihan, a dodgeball legend…(played by the great Rip Torn)….add to the bunch is our romantic lead and dodgeball ringer, Kate, who is played by Christine Taylor (Stiller’s real life wife)…smoking hot by the way…Well, we all know where this is headed….with Peter’s Average Joes and White Globo Purple Cobras facing each other in the finals with everything on the line…

This movie is full of great laughs and lots of sight gags….and the number of little one liner inside jokes are so welcome…in fact they are so good sometimes, that if your not paying attention or snoozing for a second, you’ll miss a great line or two from Patches or Peter….

And the dodgeball stuff is great….I think we can all remember a game or two of the deadly sport in a gym class at one time or another…heck, when I taught gym class at one part of my life, dodgeball was always good for a laugh or too…watching the dorks getting smoked in the head and sent packing….priceless….

All in all, Dodgeball is a good time at the movies…is it a great film, no…but it is what it is…a solid comedy with a funny cast and some great laughs…check it out if your out for a good laugh or too…

Oh, and on a closing note….to those 3 fat fucks that sat behind me and talked and commented on everything in the movie to the point where I needed to move my seat….Piss off you fat retarded ass clowns….I pray that somewhere, sometime in your lousy lives, you piss off the wrong dudes at the movies and they shit in your popcorn….
