Eurotrip

The Plot:

When the German pen pal that a high school student, Scott Thomas (Mechlowisz), has been using to help him get an "A" in German (by translating his homework over the Internet) for years suggests that they meet, the boy's reaction is to freak out, thinking that "Mieke" is a) a guy and b) some sort of older sexual stalker, looking for a young boyfriend. When he discovers to his delight that his pen pal is actually a cute fraulein (Bohrs), he and his best friend, Cooper (Pitts), who tries to con his summer internship boss into thinking he's still in America, fly to Europe, accompanied by twins Jenny (Trachtenberg) and Jamie (Wester), after graduation to meet her, in an exciting and sometimes wacky trip across Europe (London to Paris to Amsterdam), headed for Berlin. My Thoughts: (Reviewed by K-Billy)

Scotty (Scott Mechlowicz) is as predictable as they come. He’s just graduated high school and recently been dumped by his girlfriend who’s been cheating but “Scotty Doesn’t Know.” It is at this time that Scotty realizes that his German pen pal is actually a heavenly looking girl named Mieke (Jessica Boehrs). With this new information and a little help from his oversexed buddy Cooper (Jacob Pitts), he’s off to Europe to find Mieke. And ends up on a wild adventure with Cooper and his other friends, the twins, Jenny (Michelle Trachtenberg), and Jamie (Travis Wester).

This is on par to be the worst film of the year that I’ve seen. Eurotrip is the most pathetically uninspired excuse for a teen comedy that I have ever had the displeasure of watching. It’s actually insulting to sit through this and realize that the only reason the movie exists is because studio executives thought that teenagers would find this funny. On some levels they were right. I will admit that some parts are amusing and that on average teens will find this to be a funny film. But the bad far out shadows the good in this film. Of course there’s a synopsis but I can’t really say there’s a plot. It’s dumbfounding to think it took three people to write this film. Not unlike the far superior film The Girl Next Door everything happens so quickly that you find yourself hardly comprehending anything that’s going on. In no time at all the group are on their way to Europe in a decision too rashly and quickly made to ever be plausible. All of a sudden cautious Scotty decides to be a risk taker and just like that they’re on a plane to England. And what ensues once they’re in Europe is some of the lowest production quality in the planet. The makers don’t even try to hide the fact that they never shot in Europe. Oh wait my mistake, they shot in Prague. Hmm Prague, interestingly enough it’s one of the only places in Europe they don’t visit. I suppose the financing from the studios wasn’t that generous. Scenes in London, and Paris are a joke. Fake pasted on backgrounds of Big Ben and the Eiffel tower made me feel like I was watching a bad science fiction movie. It amazes me that they somehow found a way to spend 25 million dollars on this film. And of course hilarity ensues once in Europe, or should I say attempted hilarity. Many of the films scene’s are a bit off, never really reaching a level humor that would cause me to laugh. Others are disturbing such as the two twins making out. And I wasn’t laughing when I was subjected to multiple penis shots on a nude beach filled only with men. Sounds like a fun film going experience to me. Of course there are a few chuckle moments in the film. However few and far between they may be. Such as the insertion of the always wonderful David Hasselhoff in a sex scene. Nothing like Mitch from Baywatch to kill the mood. I had to laugh at that. Maybe other scenes would’ve been funny as well if it wasn’t for the atrocious acting.

I used to be under the impression that actors have to test for films and they chose the best for the part. However on this film they seemed to have picked people off of the street. Scotty is played by Scott Mechlowicz. I’m not really sure where he learned to act but I suggest he never do so again. It’s truly pathetic to watch him on screen, giving lines with such a dry delivery that I couldn’t tell if he was inebriated or mildly retarded. Either way he was incredibly boring and not for once did I find him believable at all. It’s one of the worst performances of the year. Right up there with Stellen Skarsgard from King Arthur. And then there is the incredibly cliché best buddy Cooper played by Jacob Pitts. He must’ve went to acting school with Scotty. Maybe they were in the same class. Either way he’s as bad as Mechlowicz. When your supposed to be the comic relief character, virtually being given all the funniest lines from the film and you barely make me laugh, then you know you’re a failure. They even managed to dig the Nickelodeon girl out of whatever hole she was hiding in. Harriet the Spy or should I say Michelle Trachtenberg plays Jenny in the film. Once again, dry delivery equals a poor performance and a stale character. The best part about her though is the filmmakers trying to sell her off as some secretly unnoticed sexual beauty. Sorry but Trachtenberg really can’t pull this off and fantasy style scenes of her taking off her top or bending over do nothing for me at all. Then there is her other half Jamie played by Travis Wester. You see the two are twins. Genius right. Well anyway Jamie is a loser and since the actor playing him is a hack like the rest he’s pretty much a 2-d character. Not unlike most everyone else in this movie. There are a few highlights though. Jeffrey Tambor of Arrested Development plays Scott’s dad, he more than any other character is entirely funny in his few small scenes. And then of course there is probably the surprise of the movie. The pen pal Mieke played by Jessica Boehrs. She is one of the hottest women I have ever seen in my life and even though her and Scotty have no chemistry and there is almost no back story or setup for their sudden romance it doesn’t matter. Because it’s enough just to watch her onscreen. That is the one and only reason to see the film.

It’s a shame really. This looked like a very funny film. Americans are always fond of making fun of the rest of the world so this was the perfect opportunity. Unfortunately they made it as unrealistic as possible never for once making you feel like they were really ever in Europe. The acting is probably the worst that I’ve seen in a while, a long while. And the story is so pathetically simple with no real character development and or reason to care about what happens. In fact at times I thought to myself, who the hell cares if Scotty gets the girl or not. Of course then there is the girl. Boehrs. As mentioned above, amazingly hot. So in the end Eurotrip is a speck among the tired teen comedy genre. A film with few laughs and far too many moments to sigh about the stupidity of it all. Films that are dumb can still be funny. Anchorman is a perfect example of this. But that doesn’t mean that you don’t still have to write good humorous material. Otherwise it’s not going to be funny no matter you do, including putting an overly friendly Italian on a train. Eurotrip is terrible and may god have mercy on DreamWorks for releasing this trash.
