Evanescence - Fallen
My Thoughts: (Reviewed
by O. Anderson)
"Fallen" is the debut album from the oh-so-popular 'goth-rock' band, Evanescence. Now, after hearing their first single (popularized by the movie "Daredevil") a THOUSAND times, I was pretty much sick of this band. The singer's voice, whatever her name is, just gets SO annoying, and the same guitar riffs churned over and over again in their two following singles, "Going Under" and "My Immortal", just makes you want to puke... or, in my case, dig a little deeper. Uhh?
Yes, it's true. One fateful day, I ventured into my little sister's room (shows what kind of fan-base Evanescence gathers) and grabbed "Fallen", which was stashed underneath the Hillary Duff CD. With a bit of hesitence, I listened. The first two songs, yeah, yeah, the same old crap I had heard on the radio. Track three, "Everybody's Fool", showed a little bit of promise, because there was a hint of different guitar riffing, and some actual talent from the drummer. Then, the piece of crap that is "My Immortal" sounded, I skipped ahead, to a not-so-disappointing lineup of tracks. The first of these tracks, "Haunted" pretty much blew my mind. Of course, the singer, Ami something, sounds the same as she does in EVERY song (whiney), but the music is SO awesome. The drum beat in this song, I swear, made me want to pop in my Fear Factory CD. It was just an incredible song, I'm not going to lie, I loved it. The next song, "Tourniquet", calmed me down a little, because it's nothing special, then exploded into another promising song, "Imaginary". After this song, though, I'm sorry to say, it's ALL THE SAME. This is the main problem with the album. First of all, I am SICK of hearing Ami Bitch-a-lot complain about being a freak. You could switch the lyrics to every one of their songs and still be listening to the same songs. It's pretty upsetting, because, I mean, the girl's got talent, but she could do so much more. In "Tourniquet", we actually hear something of a heavy-metal scream, but that's all. As for the guitars and drums, UGH! I swear, the drum beat in EVERY song is EXACTLY the SAME as the next. The guitars? I see nothing special from this Ben Moody fellow. Pretty much, he sucks... hey, maybe he should switch last names with Ami whatever. Anyways, all this CD is worth is a simple pilfer from a little sister.
