Jet - Get Born
My Thoughts: (Reviewed by Dirty Frank)
When most people here the band name Jet most automatically think of their hit son "Are You Gonna be My Girl" which rose to the tops at radio stations, tv commercials, and background music to many miscellaneous mtv and vh1 clips. Many will probably not even know who they are. Being a fairly new band straight out of Melbourne, Australia they still haven't reached the same popularity as other new bands such as Good Charlotte and New Found Glory. But one small thing stands between Jet and these bands, JET KICKS ASS!
This is a band that deserves every bit of popularity they have received and much, much more. Their recent and only album Get Born is something that I have been waiting to hear for at least 5 years. Finally, there is a new band that stands out and puts out the type of music that I've longed to hear. In the genre of 60's rock, 70s FM radio, and good old fashioned rock, Get Born is chock-full of songs that can resemble and compete with the music of bands that have become legends, like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and many other bands that have earned the respect in rock & roll history. Their music is in my mind the epitome of rock that you will find today. There songs are updated pure roots rock examples of the way many believe rock should have stayed.
A few songs that don't get nearly the amount of recognition as they should are the songs like "Rollover D.J.", "Move On", and "Lazy Gun", but there is not one song on this 13-track album that is a "skip-over". With their endless catchy tunes, superb instrumental background, down to earth lyrics, and the present rock atmosphere in each song this truly is a rare cd. Just hearing "Are You Gonna Be My Girl", or the recent single "Cold Hard Bitch" does not give you the whole picture of the band, you need to hear the soft but personal songs like "The Radio Song" or "Come Around Again", and the touching, heart-filled song "Timothy" to get the whole picture of Jet.
Those who say that they are just an imitation of The Strokes, or the Vines have no idea what their talking about. If you listen to all of Get Born you will realize how original and unique they are at this present time of music in general. In 5-10 years I'll get back to you and show you who's still making music and drawing the crowds. This is right now one of maybe 3 bands that I can see being around in 10 years or more. Do you think that Britney Spears fans will want to see a middle aged, wrinkled woman in a wig dancing around a stage with a bra on and tight pants while there is an alley-cat shrieking through some speakers? Or will bands like Good Charlotte and Yellow Card even want to play that music in a few years? No, but Jet has the potential, they have the skill to survive.
Jet has proven themselves greatly with only one album out. It is hard to imagine the music that they will produce in the future, and I'll bet that most agree with me that their new cd will be a very anticipated album, and hopefully it can meet the standards set by Get Born. I love this cd, I connect t it, and I listen to it a lot.
I
really hope that you will take my advice and buy this cd because it is sure
to become a classic. Jet is comprised of two brothers Nic (guitar and vocals)
and Chris Cester (Drums and vocals, along with bass player Mark Wilson and
Cam Muncey on the axe with some vocals as well. If all you've heard is "Are
You Gonna Be My Girl", you really have to dive deeper into Jet's Get
Born for there are many more great cuts. I would easily give this cd 5 stars,
but I want to leave just that little bit of improvement to see what they can
come up with in the future.
