The Girl Next Door

The Plot:

An ambitious high school senior, Matthew (Hirsch), with dreams of a career in politics is overjoyed to discover that his new neighbor, 19-year-old Danielle (Cuthbert), is absolutely beautiful, and they fall in love quickly, head over heels. Their relationship is put to the test, however when he discovers (along with the rest of the town, eventually) that she used to be a... porn star. (From Yahoo Movies)

My Thoughts: (Reviewed by K-Billy)

Matthew Kidman (Emile Hirsch) is a straight edged high school senior. He’s class president and works hard to achieve the high marks he receives in his classes. However to him, he still seems unfulfilled. He always feels like he should be doing something wild or interesting with his high school time instead of just getting good grades. Then he meets his new neighbor. A gorgeous 19 year old named Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert). After seeing her almost nude a strange relationship forms between the two before finally becoming a romance. However things aren’t that simple for Danielle used to be a porn star and taking her away from that life and the people involved in it is going to be much harder then Matthew ever imagined, capable of jeopardizing all of his hard work and his future as well.

This movie left me with uncertain emotions. Obviously it’s enjoyable to see the gorgeous Elisha Cuthbert strut around near naked in a film but there in lies the question I have with this film. Is it worth seeing just for her? Speaking as a teenage boy I’d say yes but as a movie critic I’m undecided. You see the film is as confused as the viewer as what it really is. It’s marketed as another one of those romantic teen comedies with jokes galore and gross out moments ensuing. However it never really becomes this. In fact it’s much more of a romantic film that has some comedic elements. Of course scene’s with Matthew’s friends can be hilarious. Especially when they contain his buddy Eli, played hilariously be Chris Marquette. However much of the first half of the film has Matthew interacting with Danielle. I suppose it shows him getting to know her. The second half of the film shows Matthew fighting to keep her and win her back when the older adult elements of her life come back into the mix. While this sounds simple it really isn’t. Because the film itself isn’t believable at all. There were very few moments in the film where I believed the romance. I mean it was easy to relate to a teenage kid loving and lusting after a 19 year old blonde goddess of sorts. But the suddenness and the circumstances make it seem to surreal that she wants him as well. In this respect I couldn’t really find myself being convinced of the romantic aspect of the movie. There’s definitely chemistry between the two stars in certain scenes but the script isn’t well written so it’s out of context. And of course at the end of the film the plot becomes quite convoluted, with twist after twist and plot after plot. The movie seems to run a little too long and take too many sidesteps just for the sake of keeping interest towards the end.

However the film isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination. It’s definitely a fun film at times that works well for laughs. As a mentioned above his friend’s are funny and even Matthew at times amuses with his deer in the headlights reactions to his sudden relationship with Danielle. Even antagonists like her former producer Kelly played by Timothy Olyphant satisfied me on a strange level for they were never entirely evil. In fact Matthew and Kelly form some strange sort of friendship during the film, albeit a volatile one. And as I mentioned before while the romance in context with the story may not seem believable the two star’s attractions toward each other is. The chemistry is there, the script isn’t. So even though I might roll my eyes when the two first kiss or have a flirting session I still feel they do like each other.

As Matthew, Emile Hirsch played the role well. He exhibits the apprehensive nature of a straight edged, straight A student. Yet at other times he’s able to show that all teenage boys just want to have a wild time in the end. Good student or not. Elisha Cuthbert is in this movie because she’s gorgeous but that doesn’t mean she can’t act. While I do feel that most of her screen time is limited to looking like a sex goddess, her emotional scenes as a person and not an object are convincing as well. And Cuthbert does her best to make it believable that she would fall for a dork like Matthew. She displays a vixen nature yet at other parts in the film is quite innocent and vulnerable. To tell the truth she doesn’t really look like a porn star. She doesn’t have the look of a silicone beauty who’s features are enhanced and who’s look is less then realistic. She’s a much more real looking beauty. So at times it’s hard to imagine her as a professional porn star. She’s two pretty for that. It’s an interesting performance to say the least. I really enjoyed two characters more then the others in this film. The first being Matthew’s friend Eli played Chris Marquette. He was hilarious in the movie and represents all the lustful teenage males out there who usually talk a big talk but don’t back it up. His lines are probably the most humorous. Second is Kelly is Timothy Olyphant. He’s supposed to be bad but he isn’t for the most part. He even befriends Matthew in some strange sort of way. Now this would make him too nice except in the back of your mind you do get the feeling that this guy could still beat you out of your mind without thinking about it. So he’s very convincible and entertaining as the main antagonist.

The film’s confused and I blame the script. It’s part romance, part teen comedy, part coming of age story I suppose but it doesn’t mesh very well. Sometimes the comedy seems out of place and sometimes the romance does. However the stars within the film are very likable and Elisha Cuthbert is gorgeous so it’s definitely a film worth watching. Even though none of it’s really believable and the whole thing has a bit of a surreal dream sequence feel to it, it still manages to entertain. The ending may be a bit too complicated and the film a bit longer then it should’ve been but I still believe that overall it was a good film worth seeing.
