My Thoughts: (Reviewed by Mike)
Before I start going off on how beautiful this film looks, from the fight scenes to all the colors used, I have to lay down some background info. This movie was made two years ago and won a ton of awards over seas and the director received heavy criticism from the Chinese government for past work. But enough of that, on to the eye candy, and boy does this movie deliver. The action is so good that I feel bad talking about some of the fight scenes because it almost feels like I am giving away a spoiler. The action is not in your face, quick cut, matrix style fight scenes (although there are some) that are popular. It is wire fighting so it can be a bit slow for some people, but it is not so much the fighting that is amazing as what is going on around in the environment during the fighting. A lot of the fights are shot from far back, so the whole landscape is seen, and there is a lot of flying dust, leaves, hair, blown fabric, but all used to stunning dramatic effect. The ballet type of fighting is enhanced so much by the cinematography. As for the colors in the movie, they are brightly abundant throughout and are just a sight to behold. Something you have to see to believe. The story is told through flashbacks and a really good idea is how the characters’ costumes always change and each color represents something different. Red is used to show imagination, while blue represents perceived reality and white is truth.
So is it the best movie ever made? Not really and that is because of the story. A simple story on the surface, it has a lot of Chinese nationalism within it, how the country became unified, but most people are just there to see the action, not to listen to the story. There are some cool things about the plot though, such as how love can be used for other things then peace and happiness. If you actually listen to the story, your enjoyment of the movie may or may not be taken down a notch. But if you are just there for the action, which you should be, then you will be more then glad you hadn’t spent that money on buying the Matrix box set. It’s no Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, but it is just one of those kick ass movies that make you want to fly, even if you can only jump a few feet.
