My Thoughts: (Reviewed by K-Billy)
Jason X is the tenth film in the Friday The 13th series. After being cryogenically frozen by the government, Jason is dormant and rendered harmless. However many years into the future, a group of students go on an expedition down to the now unlivable earth. They discover the frozen slasher and blindly bring him onboard. What ensues is a bloodbath as Jason is revived and goes after everyone on the ship. The only thing that stands in his way is a group of commandos and a cyborg robot with plenty of power.
Oh my god, my poor Friday the 13th series. Why was this movie made? I know that none of these movies are expected to win Oscars but it is seriously insulting to think that even a fan of the genre such as myself would enjoy this film. I wasn’t too impressed with the idea of sending Jason into space, but I eventually started to think that if done right it could actually be quite interesting. Boy was I wrong. This movie has the worst acting of any Jason movie ever, and I mean ever. Even worse then Jason Takes Manhattan. And if you saw that, you’d know how bad the acting is.
The story, oh the story, it totally disregards all other Jason movies. It actually starts out somewhat promising with him almost escaping from his Crystal Lake prison, but the second the students arrive and he gets on board the ship it really goes downhill from there. First off nothing that happens in this film is scary, that’s not a good sign for a horror movie. And most of the scenarios in which Jason strikes are so ridiculous that you actually find yourself laughing at the serious parts of the film. Because trust me, you won’t be laughing at the parts that intentionally try to amuse you. Poorly written. The commando team on this ship was a joke and are slaughtered by Mr. Voorhees and the cyborg who actually defeats him at one point is played by an annoying actress that made me wince every time she spoke and does absolutely nothing for the story. In fact none of the acting is good. Everyone in this film gave pathetically mediocre to terrible performances. The only exception being Kane Hodder, who plays Jason. With no lines at all he easily is better then the rest of the cast merely on presence. The rest should never act again.
Oh and then there’s the twist. Uber-Jason, an upgraded metallic version of Jason. Please for the love of god, New Line do not keep this going, disregard this movie entirely, because if the next Friday the 13th has space Jason I am going to boycott that film. One thing I noticed in particular about this film was that the music was terrible, and was a cross between horror scores and techno space music. These two do not mix and gave the film a comic feel that implied shoddy production, rather then horror franchise. And for the grand finale, the special effects. The effects in this movie were absolutely terrible, anything showing the ship, or space where so unbelievably fake looking that I almost cried, it’s that bad. And of course this movie falls into the lovely conventions, teens doing drugs, having sex, and acting stupid.
Overall this is the worst installment of the entire series, right there with Jason Goes To Hell. They really need to overhaul this series because this is not only one of the worst Jason movies, but probably one of the worst horror movies I’ve ever seen. It’s unbelievably poorly acted, the story is terrible, even though it had promise, the music and effects are pathetic and seem like this film was made on a home PC using Imovie and worst of all it wasn’t even scary. I’m going to try to forget this film ever was made. A horror film that falls into all the conventions of the genre. Simply tiring.
