Secondhand Lions

The Plot:

Set in 1960s Texas, this is the story of a timid teenager, Walter (Osment), forced to spend the summer by his irresponsible mother (Sedgwick) with his eccentric (and recently rich) great-uncles (Caine and Duvall) on their farm, as he learns more about their mysterious and dangerous pasts, which we see as flashbacks. My Thoughts: (Reviewed by O. Anderson)

While keeping me entertained, Second-Hand Lions, despite a great cast (Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, and Haley Joel Osment), was somewhat lacking. The story is about a young man, Walter (Osment), who is left with his two crazy uncles (Duval, Caine), who supposedly hide a great fortune somewhere on their property. The film basically developes the growing relationship between Walter and his two uncles.

Now, this film was not bad at all. I just have a couple problems with it. First of all, Walter is supposed to be a "shy" boy. You get this impression for the first five or ten minutes you see him on screen; he doesn't speak much, seems pretty timid. Shy, right? Plus, his uncles are supposedly these crazy psychos, but i didn't see too much of that at all. After the first day with his uncles, the kid is talking like he had been there for years. Their relationship developes way too quickly. I don't care if the movie would've been a lot longer, I want to see some awkward situations!! It would've made a lot more sense. Overall, though, the movie was pretty good, with a sensible, logical ending. The cast was very good, as was the performance. Worth a rental.
