Godsmack - The Other Side
My Thoughts: (Reviewed by O. Anderson)
This
EP was an extremely unexpected move from the metal band Godsmack. My initial
reaction was, "Godsmack? ACOUSTIC?!" However, as a fan of the band,
I eagerly purchased (cough, borrowed and burned, cough) this seven-track CD.
I was met with not an ounce of disappointment. I hadn't really had any expectations,
I wasn't really sure what to think about it at all, but this struck me as
a very good release. To some, it might seem like a vain move from Godsmack,
but I definitely didn't see it as vain at all. I think it displayed the band's
true talents, which they have a lot of. Without hearing these acoustic songs,
and just the other ones, one might feel that Tony Rambola, guitarist, doesn't
really have much talent in other aspects of guitar playing, which was my impression
of him. Upon hearing the acoustic songs on this album, I found that I was
sorely mistaken. Also, even though Sully Erna, frontman, doesn't have a very
large vocal range, he still brings his prescence to these softer songs. On
this EP, you'll find acoustic versions of "Re-Align" (Faceless),
"Keep Away" (Godsmack), "Spiral" (Awake), and an interesting
version of "Awake" (Awake), called "Asleep". Also, this
CD contains three new tracks, and features some good vocalists. I think the
only down-side to this EP would be the fact that Sully Erna used this release
as an advertising pitch for a band he's producing (under his new label), called
Dropbox. Stick to the music, man! Anyways, I would totally recommend to any
Godsmack, and, for that matter, rock fan. It's great.
