Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl

The Plot:

Set in the Caribbean Sea in the 17th century, this is the story of a gentleman rogue of a pirate, Jack Sparrow (Depp), who teams up with the daughter (Knightley) of a governor (Pryce) to stop the evil plan of a ship of dangerous pirates (led by Rush) who are trying to reverse an ancient curse that leaves them stuck between life and death, with the light of the moon revealing their skeletons, like some kind of undead monsters. My Thoughts: (Reviewed by K-Billy)

From director Gore Verbinski comes a very entertaining action film. This film deals with the character Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) who with the help from Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) must take on a whole crew of cursed pirates who are literally the walking dead. Together they must save Miss Elizabeth Swan (Kiera Knightley) whom the pirates have taken captive. And Jack must finally face his old nemesis Captain Barbossa (Geoffery Rush).

Talk about an absolutely pleasant surprise. When I heard that Disney of all people was going to make a pirate movie slightly based on their theme park ride I expected the worst. And then when it was known that there would be comedic elements to the movie I was bloody well ready to give it an F. However some how, and I credit the writing partly and the amazing performance of Johnny Depp they were able to pull it off and make one hell of an entertaining movie. An action adventure film at an almost unheard of 2 hours and 23 minutes. Now that’s an achievement.

The story of this film goes above and beyond that of previous swashbucklers. The writing team really let their imagination go wild with this one. Not only are there evil pirates, but they’re cursed and nearly invincible because of this. With a story including cursed treasure, an island of unimaginable riches, and a forbidden love, how could you go wrong. This film really entertains on all accounts and quite frankly that’s all it’s here to do. You won’t be digging to deep into collective thought while watching this, just prepare to be entertained.

With all of the good things going for this movie it would not have been half as good if it weren’t for Johnny Depp. This man is one of the best actors out there. He basically saved Once Upon A Time In Mexico from being a total disaster and has been consistently excellent in all and I mean all of the films that he’s been in. In Pirates Of The Caribbean, Depp is wonderfully over the top in a caricature role that had me laughing throughout the whole movie. Looking a little bit like the rocker Keith Richards and acting like he was drunk out of his mind, Depp was charming on all accounts. Orlando Bloom did a nice job but I found him to be a little annoying at some parts in the film, but maybe that’s just because he’s playing the straight forward, one dimensional good guy hero. Kiera Knightley who is a relatively new face in american films did a wonderful job as the not so proper Elizabeth. And Geoffery Rush plays the bad guy well enough to be effective, but in a way you almost feel sorry for his character while watching the film.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a highly entertaining film. It’s big on action and knows what type of film it wants to be. The most surprising aspect is that in a world where action films that try to be comedic usually end up being pathetically unfunny, Pirates of the Caribbean will make you laugh at all the jokes. Nothing seems forced here, and it’s all extremely well written. It does tend to drag a tad at the end but nothing that should detract from the overall quality of this film. Overall an excellent and entertaining film that is surprisingly good.
