Schroeder is Gone!!! |
So what's the best move the Lions have made so far this offseason? I'd have to say releasing Bill Schroeder. It should've spoken volumes to the Lions that Brett Favre didn't want him back in Green Bay, but they proceeded to dump popular WR Johnnie Morton and replace him with Schroeder. Ever since then, the receiving corps seemed lacking in qualities that were present in Morton: dependability, durability, making the big catch on 3rd down, etc. What qualities did Schroeder possess? Well he was thought to have big play ability, but that never materialized in Detroit. He drew the ire of Lions fans for his frequent dropped passes. His terrible play went far beyond the drops, though. He was also known for a lack of toughness, miscommunication on routes (sometimes resulting in interceptions), and untimely holding penalties. It's been a long time since I've been this happy about the Lions getting rid of a player. There's no question that there's still work to be done on revamping the receiving corps. But the addition by subtraction of releasing Schroeder was a big step in the right direction.
