Gregorios award for Dr Kurien

NEW DELHI, JULY 28: Dr Varghese Kurien, architect of India's White Revolution, has been selected for the Paulos Mar Gregorios award for 1999 in recognition of his pioneering work in the areas of community-based development, rural development and cooperative movement.

President K R Narayanan will present the award on December 13 at Vigyan Bhavan. The award carries Rs one lakh in cash and a citation.

Dr Kurien will be the second winner of this award. The first was given to Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama in 1977.

This was announced here today by His Grace Job Mar Philoxenos, Delhi Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church and chairman of the Sophia Society which has instituted the award in memory of Dr Paulos Mar Gregorios, former president of the World Council of Churches and a renowned theologian and philosopher.
