Emotions became the first single from Mariah’s second album with the same title. When she was preparing the songs for the Emotions album, Tommy decided to bring in David Cole and Robert Clivilles to work with Mariah on the music for her songs. Together they made four titles, including the song Emotions. Mariah got the inspiration for the song from the ‘70s group named Emotions, who had a number one hit ‘Best Of My Love’ in 1977 produced by Maurice White (from Earth, Wind And Fire). The song had a strong drum support and David Cole thought it was a great idea to use the group name as Mariah suggested, because this song influenced her melody.
This is how the song Emotions was born... In US the single came with the original LP version, C&C Club Mix and C&C Club Mix instrumental version. They have also included remix of There’s Got To Be A Way.
The single came out on August 31, 1991, and debuted on #35 on Billboard’s Hot 100. After six weeks on October 12, 1991, it peaked to #1, where it stayed for three weeks. Mariah became the first artist, who had his/her first five singles on No. 1 spot. The previous record was held by Jackson Five (four singles). Though the album was not so successful as her debut Mariah Carey, the single’s chart records were very important. Mariah also performed the song at MTV Music Video Awards in 1991.

The video for Emotions was directed by Jim Preiss. He created a party kind of atmosphere, making Mariah the center of everything. The video starts with Mariah singing on the back seat of a convertible, dressed in a white shirt over a ‘50s style bikini. Later there are cuts to the party scenes, where people are dancing, talking, but nobody is drinking or smoking. They probably tried to give an idea that a party can be without drinking and smoking, which is an important message from Mariah. Black and white people dance, which shows that people can get along together regardless of their color. Fight against racism always was and still is Mariah’s message to this world.
Later they have also released a video for Emotions remix, where the colors are reduced down, so things inside are in blue and everything outside is in brown tones.
