Front cover Heartbreaker was Mariah's first single from the album Rainbow. It was first premiered online on August 16, 1999, via Microsoft Windows Media. The song was also released to the radio stations at the same time. Heartbreaker debuted on Hot 100 on #60. It rose to #16 just before the in-stores release. It was then released on September 21 in the US and September 28 in Europe. On that day, Mariah made an appearance in one mall in NYC to greet her fans and sign their copies of Heartbreaker.
Heartbreaker CD Heartbreaker sold 271,000 copies in the first week and became right away Mariah's 14th No.1 single. Mariah achieved the biggest first and one week sales in her career... She confirmed one more time that she is the biggest artist of the 90's, because only Elvis Presley and The Beatles had more #1 singles in their whole career.

The track was produced by DJ Clue and Mariah. The song is featuring rapper Jay-Z. The Remix also feature guest artists Missy Elliot and Da Brat. Here's what Mariah said about the song for MTV:
"It's pretty much [in] the classic style of my up-tempo classics like 'Fantasy' or 'Dream Lover. But it's kind of fun and has a new edge to it, I think, and definitely having Jay-Z takes it to a whole 'nother level. And Clue makes it really fun and stuff. And then the remix... I'm so excited about the remix. It's also gonna go on the album, and it features Missy Elliott and Da Brat, and it's kinda like a girl-power answer record, and it's to the loop of Snoop [Dogg]'s 'Ain't No Fun.' They're not ready for that one!"

The CD was available in two or four track version.

Music Video:
[To the top]

The music video was shot on July 30 and 31 in Los Angeles, CA. It was directed by Brett Ratner. Mariah comes to the movies with her friends and she sees her boyfriend with another girl, who is also played by Mariah (she's wearing a black wig). Mariah and her friends start throwing popcorn at that guy and the girl. The girl goes to the toilete and Mariah follows her. They have a big karatte kinda fight in there... At the end Mariah purs a drink on her boyfriend.

One interesting and funny moment acurred during the shooting of the theatre-scene. The real Mariah and her girlfriends sat a few seats behind, throwing popcorn at the boyfriend and the stand-in for the evil blackhaired Mariah. The stand-in's real name was Natalia. There were about 500 people in the theatre, and everyone was having a good time; laughing at the popcorn-throwing and all. In the middle of shooting this scene, Natalia suddenly got up and left the room, leaving everyone confused. Natalia, who didn't speak too well English, apparently had thought that everyone was laughing at her. (thanks to Tommy Hattrem for this info)

The part of the video with Jay-Z's rap was first taken by an animated Mariah, but later also Jay-Z was featured...

Another version of the video was released for the Remix. Check here for more info...

Heartbreaker
Written By: Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Shirley Elliston, Lincoln Chase, Michael Walde, Jeffrey Cohen
Produced By: Mariah Carey and DJ Clue

Yeah
Aight, let's go
Gimme your love--(16x in background until start of first verse)
Hey, you gotta bounce to this like this
You're almost kinda watching this
Uh-huh
Whoo oo oo
Escape

Oh you look so good
I don't wanna let go
And although I should
I can't leave you alone
'Cause your so disarming
I'm caught-up in the midst
of you and I can not resist at all

(Chorus 1): Boy you I do
The things you want to do
The way I used to do
Could you love me baby
Holding me feelin' you
Could you go and break my heart?

(Chorus 2): Heartbreaker you've got the best of me
but I just keep on coming back incessantly
Oh why did you have to run your game on me?
I should have known right from the start
you'd go and break my heart

(Gimme your love)--8x

It's a shame to be
so euphoric and weak
when you smile at me
and you tell me the things
that you know are stated
to relinquish my love to you
but I can not resist at all

(Chorus 1)

(Chrous 2)

(JAY-Z RAP):
OK
Cool
Aight
Yo
She wanna shop wit Jay
play box wit Jay
She wanna pillowfight in the middle of the night
She wanna drive my Benz with five of her friends
She wanna creep past the block, spyin' again

She wanna roll wit Jay, chase skeeos away
She wanna fight wit lame chicks, blow my day
She wanna respect the rest, kick me to the curb
if she find one strand a hair longer than hers

She want
make love in the Jacuzzi
Rub up in the movies
Access to the old crib,
keys to da newbie

She wanna
answer the phone
tatoo her arm
last one I got her
sent it back to her mom

She call me Heartbreaker
when we apart it makes her
wanna piece of paper,
scribble down "I hate ya"

But she know she love Jay because
she love everything Jay say Jay does, and a...

(Chorus 2)

(Chorus 2)

(Chorus 2, with no background music but with background vocals)
