My All was Mariah’s fifth single from her album Butterfly. In US this was only the second single, released on April 21, 1998 as ‘My All/Breakdown’.
My All is a beautiful ballad, talking about love and devotion. The lyrics was written by Mariah and the music was produced and arranged in a collaboration with Walter Afanasieff. This is one of the songs from the new album that is the most similar to her early ballads, so it was no surprise that it reached the top of the world’s charts. Mariah is again showing the range and beauty of her voice and also the instrumental side of the song is really unique too... She performed the song on many shows and also on the World Music Awards ’98.
The single for My All/Breakdown officially reached Gold and Platinum on May 22, 1998. On the Billboard Charts My All debuted on #2 in May and that was the second Mariah’s single that debuted on #2. The same happened to Always Be My Baby, so Mariah broke another record - most number #2 debuts. On May 14 the single reached the top position and became the 13th No.1 single, all together covering 58 weeks for Mariah. With this record Mariah became the third most successful artist beside M. Jackson, only Elvis and the Beatles had more number ones. My All has dropped back to #2 spot after spending one week at the top.
My All single came as a CD single and a maxi single, also featuring Breakdown remix. There was also one great remix by David Morales: Classic Club Mix, which Mariah also performed at the Divas Live show. After a great success of the original single, Sony decided to release another version (Stay Awhile) on June 9th, with remixes by JD. Mariah is featuring rappers Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz. Together they have created a great remix. My All sounds cool even in the rap style.
Breakdown remix is featuring Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone from Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony in The Mo’ Thugs Remix.
Mariah also recorded a very good Spanish version of My All, named Mi Todo.

Music Video:
[To the top]
The music video for My All came out on March 19, 1998 first shown on MTV. That was Mariah’s fifth music video from the Butterfly album. The director was Herb Ritts, a fashion photographer. The video was very likely filmed in Puerto Rico and it’s in black & white technique.
All the scenes are happening during the night, which makes everything look even more beautiful. Mariah of course looks great, she is dressed in a black mini dress and in the beginning she is lying on a sea float. There is also a lighthouse in the distance and Mariah starts remembering the past days.
She thinks about this tall blond guy standing on the top of the lighthouse in front of a big reflector. He looks kinda weird, with long hair (I guess they could pick someone nicer). Anyway the camera than cuts to Mariah again and she kneels down into shallow water on the beach...
Later there is a take where she is lying in a big seashell and singing. Again camera shows Mariah getting out of the water and showing her wet dress.
Later we return to the scene on the lighthouse, where Mariah and the ‘handsome’ guy (not really) start kissing passionately. She’s only wrapped in a towel and they lean on the fence. There is a short scene of Mariah’s revealed back. The kissing scene is pretty touchy, but it’s also made with a great taste, so it’s not showing too much. After they kiss, it seems like the guy left Mariah all alone and she stands there on the lighthouse, wrapped in a white towel, looking toward the stars. She looks really beautiful...
We return to Mariah on the beach, where she’s singing, surrounded by some kind of flowers. In this scene she reminds a little of the Vision Of Love video (the wall scene), because she has a very similar look. She cries after her lost love and the video ends at the sea again...
The video is very sensual and really beautiful, as also the song is. It received a lot of attention on MTV, where it was pretty high on the charts...
