Mariah signed to Columbia Records (CBS) in 1990. After signing the contract Mariah worked really hard with her friend Ben Margulies and the Vision Of Love was one of the songs that made it to the demo tape. It was a beautiful ballad about love and expectations. The producers realized this could be a future hit, so they decided that that would be the first single for her debut album, but she had to make some changes. They started working with a producer Rhett Lawrence. Ben and Mariah changed the tempo, they have add guitars and bass, her demo recordings were used for the second voice, so she had to make another leading vocal. Mariah was not too happy with that much production, but that was the only way to get her single and album released.
Mariah remembers: ‘They did put me with different producers that they wanted to have me work with, and this being the first album, I took a certain amount of direction from the record company. You know they are taking a chance.’
Vision Of Love debuted on Hot 100 charts on June 2, 1990, entering at number 73. Nine weeks later, on August 4, 1990, the single reached #1, where it stayed for 4 weeks. This was of course a huge success for a brand new singer on the music scene. Mariah conquered the hearts of many people. In UK the single debuted at #6.
As this was her first single, there weren’t any remixes of Vision Of Love, so the single came with some other Mariah’s song from upcoming Mariah Carey album (Someday, Prisoner, All In Your Mind...).
Mariah was nominated for five Grammy awards that year, including a nomination Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, for Vision Of Love. She won that two awards that night: Best New Artist and Best Vocal Performance. Mariah also had the honor to sing her Vision Of Love on stage, introducing herself to millions in US and around the world. This was the start of Mariah’s never-ending story of success.

At the time Vision Of Love was ready for release, Mariah also had to shoot a music video. The video had to be something special, because she was a new artist on the scene, so CBS had to make a good advertising. The first finished product did not impress people at Columbia, so they have ordered another try. All together they have spent around $450,000 for both videos, so some employees were not too happy about that.
The new clip was produced by Ron Kay. The video was featuring Mariah on a stage set with fast moving clouds in the background. Mariah was placed on a staircase near the wall and there was also a tree with a swing. The whole set was very simple, so the main focus was on Mariah and her singing. She is wearing a simple black jumpsuit and her hair is curly.
