The Regiment was raised on 8 July 1635 by N. De La Rothiere. The Regiment was not divided in 1775 but had been reduced to two battalions by 1792. | ||

![]() | Revolutionary Campaigns:In 1792, the Regiment was based in Lille. It took part in the disasterous raid on Tournai; 29 April 1792, where panic seized the troops and they fled back to Lille. In September of that year the fought in the actions of Lannoy, Roubaix and Tourcoing and the defence of the camp at Maulde. In October they were transferred to l'Armee des Ardennes. In 1793, the formed part of l'Armee du Rhin. From 1794-96 the served in l'Armee de Sambre-et-Meuse. The first amalgamation (29 December 1794) saw the 2eme Bn, become the 2eme Bn, 112eme Demi-Brigade-de-Bataille together with the 7eme Bn, Volunteers du Doubs and the 8eme des Deux-Sevres. As a result of the second amalgamation (20 February 1796) the Regiment became the 88eme Demi-Brigade-de-Ligne together with the 3eme Bn, 173eme Demi-Brigade-de-Bataille. In 1797, the Regiment saw service with l'Armees de Sambre-et-Meuse and d'Italie and was distinguished by its conduct at the crossing of the Isonzo and the clash at Gradisca; 17 March 1797. In 1798, it fought in the ranks of l'Armees d'Italie and de l'Orient and gained distinction for its actions at the clash at Sediman; 7 October 1798. From 1799-1800, fought in l'Armee de l'Orient. In 1801, it saw service with l'Armees de l'Orient and d'Italie again gaining distinction at the battle of Alexandria; 21 March 1801. From 1802-03 served in l'Armee de Naples. In 1803 it was redesignated the 88eme Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne. | |
![]() | Napoleonic Campaigns:In 1805, participated in th manouevre on Ulm and fought at the battle of Auisterlitz; 2 December 1805. In 1806, it was engaged at the battle of Jena; 14 October 1806 and the battle of Pultusk; 26 December 1806. The Regiment was not involved in any actions of note between 1807-1808. In 1809 elements fought in both Spain and Austria and was present at the clash at Ebersberg; 3 May 1809, Essling; 22 May 1809, the battle of Wagram; 5 July 1809, the clash at Arzobispo bridge; 8 August 1809 and the battle of Ocana; 19 November 1809. In 1810, it was engaged at the clash at Villa Garcia; 11 August 1810. During 1811, it was oinvolved in the siege of Badajoz; 31 January - 10 June 1811, the battle of Gebora river; 19 February 1811, the battle of Fuentes de Onoro; 5 May 1811 and the battle of Albuera; 16 May 1811. The Regiment did not suffer in the disasterous Russian campaign although it was oinvolved in Spain at the defence of Badajoz; 1-7 April 1812. In 1813, elements fought at the battle of Lutzen; 2 May 1813, the battle of Wurschen; 21 May 1813, the battle of Vittoria; 21 July 1813, the battle of Sorauren; 28 June 1813, the battle at Bidassoa; 1 September 1813, the skirmish at Dresden; 17 September 1813, the defence of Dresden; 3 October 1813, the clash at Bayonette redoubt; 7 October 1813, the battle of Leipzig; 16-18 October 1813, the clash at Sarre; 10 November 1813 and the defence of Danzig; 22 November 1813. In 1814, it was present at La Rothiere; 1 February 1814, the battle of Laon; 9 March 1814 and the battle of Paris; 30 March 1814. The hundred days saw the Regiment engaged at the battle of Ligny; 16 June 1815 and Wavre; 18 June 1815. | |
