Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne Guyenne (Nr 21)






The Regiment was raised on 24 April 1610 by the Comte de Vaubecourt. On 18 April 1776 the Regiment was split to form two Regiments. The first and third battalions retaining the old title and number. The second and fourth battalions went to form the Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne Viennois (Nr 22).

Revolutionary Campaigns:

From 1792-98 the 2eme Bn, was posted to l'Armee du Nord and participated in the defence of Lille. In 1793 it served with Dumouriex in the invasion of Belgium. After the defeat of Neerwinden it formed part of the garrison of the fortified camp at La Madelain. The first amalgamation (22 August 1794) saw the Bn, become the 2eme Bn, 44eme Demi-Brigade-de-Bataille, together with the 2eme Bn, Volunteers de la Correze and the 5eme Bn, de Rhone et Loire. The second amalgamation (8 January 1796) resulted in the Bn, being redesignated the 22eme Demi-Brigaded-de-Ligne. From 1798-99 it served with l'Armees d'Allemagne and de Batavie and was distinguished in its conduct in all its engagements against the Anglo-Russian invasion of 1799. In 1800 served in l'Armees de l'Interieur, de Reserve and d'Italie and was present at the clash of Chiusella. In 1803 it was renamed the 22eme Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne.

Napoleonic Campaigns:

On 8 November 1806 elements of the Regiment were involved in a skirmish at Hameln. In 1807, the Regiment saw action at the siege of Straslund; between 29 January and 26 February, the battle of Heilsberg on the 10 June and on the 14 June, fought at the battle of Friedland. The Regiment was posted to the Peninsula in 1808 where the majority of it remained until 1813, although elements were engaged in northern Germany in 1809 and Saxony in 1813. Clashed with Spanish brigands at Castrillo-Guarena on 18 July 1812 and four days later fought at the battle of Salamanca. The Regiment was represented in Saxony at the battles of Lutzen; 2 may 1813, Wurschen; 21 May 1813, Katzbach; 26 August 1813 and Leipzig; 16-19 October 1813. The year 1814 was spent defending Maastricht. The campaign of the hundred days saw the Regiment feature in the battles of Ligny; 16 June 1815, Wavre; 18 June 1815 and a clash at Namur; 19 June 1815.
