Regiment d'Infanterie de Ligne Vexin (Nr 72)






The Regiment was raised on 1 March 1674 by Rene Gaspard de La Croix, Marquis de Castries.

Revolutionary Campaigns:

In 1792 the 1er Bn, was despatched to Besancon to l'Armee du Rhin, whilst the 2eme Bn, went to l'Armee du Var for the conquest of Nice. In 1793 the 1er Bn was transferred to l'Armee du Nord at Valenciennes. After the fall of that town they were posted to l'Armee de l'Ouest, for operations in La Vendee, where they remained until 1796. The 2eme Bn, meantime had been sent to l'Armee Pyrenees-Occidentales (1793-96). The 1er Bn, escaped the first amalgamation although its sister Bn, was made the 2eme Bn, 134eme Demi-Brigade-de-Bataille together with the 3eme and 4eme Bns, Volunteers des Basses Pyrenees. The second amalgamation resulted in its incorporation into the 70eme Demi-Brigade-de-Ligne. The 1er Bn, also going to form this Demi-Brigade.
