Recorded between 1989 and 1990 after his self titled solo debut, 'Sweet Insanity' was rejected by Brian's record label and never officially released. It's not hard to see why. The production encapsulates everything lame and annoying about synthesizer driven 1980s music, complete with revolting keyboard sounds, soulless programmed percussion and drum tracks and unnecessary layers of reverb coating every track.
To make matters worse, the music just isn't any good. Brian was heavily under the influence of his doctor, Eugene Landy, while making this record. It's probable that Landy was directly involved with writing the music and lyrics, because these are the worst songs in Brian's catalog, featuring pedestrian melodies and sickening lyrics. The track 'Smart Girls' sums it all up: it's a rap song that starts with the line, "My name is Brian and I'm the man, I write hit songs with the wave of my hand." Not anymore, pal. What's even more amusing are the Beach Boys samples sprinkled throughout the song that throw off the beat!
Other appalling songs include the forced reggae of "I Do," a pointless 16 second vocal exercise called "Concert Tonight," the banal dance song "Hotter," a nauseating balled called "Rainbow Eyes" and an insipid celebration of early rock and roll with the inventive title, "The Spirit of Rock and Roll." The latter even features a uninsipired vocal from Bob Dylan, someone who is so obviously associated with 50s rock and roll!
I purchased this disc as an import for $25 and was so disgusted that I took it back and demanded my money back. Someone has since copied it for me on CD-R as a novelty item. The only redeeming aspect of this disc is that Brian's voice still sounds as good as it did on his first solo album. For those who think this CD is actually good, and there are some of you out there on the net, at least the sound quality of this bootleg is quite good.
